After Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judea during the reign of King Herod, wise men arrived in Jerusalem from the east 1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived unexpectedly in Jerusalem,
and asked, "Where is the one who was born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."2saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."
When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, as was all of Jerusalem. 3When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
He called together all the high priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 4So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born."
They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, because that is what was written by the prophet:5In Bethlehem of Judea," they told him, "because this is what was written by the prophet:
O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, because from you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" 6And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah: because out of you will come a leader who will shepherd My people Israel."
Then Herod secretly called together the wise men, found out from them the time the star had appeared, 7Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared.
and sent them to Bethlehem. He told them, "As you go, search carefully for the child. When you find him, tell me so that I, too, may go and worship him."8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the child. When you find Him, report back to me so that I too can go and worship Him."
After listening to the king, they set out, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. 9After hearing the king, they went on their way. And there it was--the star they had seen in the east! It led them until it came and stopped above the place where the child was.
When they saw the star, they were ecstatic with joy. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed beyond measure.
After they went into the house and saw the child with his mother Mary, they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasure sacks and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 11Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and falling to their knees, they worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they left for their own country by a different road.12And being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route.
After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt," he said. "Stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and kill him." 13After they were gone, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Get up! Take the child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him."
So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and left at night for Egypt. 14So he got up, took the child and His mother during the night, and escaped to Egypt.
He stayed there until Herod's death in order to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said, "Out of Egypt I called my Son." 15He stayed there until Herod's death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt I called My Son.
Herod flew into a rage when he learned that he had been tricked by the wise men, so he ordered the execution of all the male children in Bethlehem and all its neighboring regions, who were two years old and younger, according to the time that he had determined from the wise men. 16Then Herod, when he saw that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the male children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.
Then what was declared by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled when he said,17Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:
"A voice was heard in Ramah: wailing and great mourning. Rachel was crying for her children. She refused to be comforted, because they no longer existed." 18A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; and she refused to be consoled, because they were no more.
But after Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. 19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
"Get up," he said. "Take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead."20saying, "Get up! Take the child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, because those who sought the child's life are dead."
So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went into the land of Israel. 21So he got up, took the child and His mother, and entered the land of Israel.
But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, after having been warned in a dream. So he left for the region of Galilee 22But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee.
and settled in a town called Nazareth in order to fulfill what was said by the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene." 23Then he went and settled in a town called Nazareth to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets, that He will be called a Nazarene.
