| 1 Why do you stand far away, LORD? Why do you hide in times of distress? | 1Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble? |
| 2The wicked one arrogantly pursues the afflicted, who are trapped in the schemes he devises. | 2The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined. |
| 3For the wicked one boasts about his own desire; he blesses the greedy and despises the LORD. | 3For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth. |
| 4With haughty arrogance, the wicked thinks, "God will not seek justice." He always presumes "There is no God." | 4The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. |
| 5Their ways always seem prosperous. Your judgments are on high, far away from them. They scoff at all their enemies. | 5His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. |
| 6They say to themselves, "We will not be moved throughout all time, and we will not experience adversity." | 6He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. |
| 7Their mouth is full of curses, lies, and oppression, their tongues spread trouble and iniquity. | 7His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. |
| 8They wait in ambush in the villages, they kill the innocent in secret. | 8He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. |
| 9Their eyes secretly watch the helpless, lying in wait like a lion in his den. They lie in wait to catch the afflicted. They catch the afflicted when they pull him into their net. | 9He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net. |
| 10The victim is crushed, and he sinks down; the helpless fall by their might. | 10He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones. |
| 11The wicked say to themselves, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." | 11He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it. |
| 12Rise up, LORD! Raise your hand, God. Don't forget the afflicted! | 12Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble. |
| 13Why do the wicked despise God and say to themselves, "God will not seek justice."? | 13Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it. |
| 14But you do see! You take note of trouble and grief in order to take the matter into your own hand. The helpless one commits himself to you; you have been the orphan's helper. | 14Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. |
| 15Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; so that when you seek out his wickedness you will find it no more. | 15Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none. |
| 16The LORD is king forever and ever; nations will perish from his land. | 16The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land. |
| 17LORD, you heard the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen them, you will listen carefully, | 17LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: |
| 18to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that men of the earth may cause terror no more. | 18To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress. |
