| 1 Why do you stand far away, LORD? Why do you hide in times of distress? | 1O LORD, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I am in trouble? |
| 2The wicked one arrogantly pursues the afflicted, who are trapped in the schemes he devises. | 2The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor. Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others. |
| 3For the wicked one boasts about his own desire; he blesses the greedy and despises the LORD. | 3For they brag about their evil desires; they praise the greedy and curse the LORD. |
| 4With haughty arrogance, the wicked thinks, "God will not seek justice." He always presumes "There is no God." | 4The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead. |
| 5Their ways always seem prosperous. Your judgments are on high, far away from them. They scoff at all their enemies. | 5Yet they succeed in everything they do. They do not see your punishment awaiting them. They sneer at all their enemies. |
| 6They say to themselves, "We will not be moved throughout all time, and we will not experience adversity." | 6They think, “Nothing bad will ever happen to us! We will be free of trouble forever!” |
| 7Their mouth is full of curses, lies, and oppression, their tongues spread trouble and iniquity. | 7Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats. Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues. |
| 8They wait in ambush in the villages, they kill the innocent in secret. | 8They lurk in ambush in the villages, waiting to murder innocent people. They are always searching for helpless victims. |
| 9Their eyes secretly watch the helpless, lying in wait like a lion in his den. They lie in wait to catch the afflicted. They catch the afflicted when they pull him into their net. | 9Like lions crouched in hiding, they wait to pounce on the helpless. Like hunters they capture the helpless and drag them away in nets. |
| 10The victim is crushed, and he sinks down; the helpless fall by their might. | 10Their helpless victims are crushed; they fall beneath the strength of the wicked. |
| 11The wicked say to themselves, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." | 11The wicked think, “God isn’t watching us! He has closed his eyes and won’t even see what we do!” |
| 12Rise up, LORD! Raise your hand, God. Don't forget the afflicted! | 12Arise, O LORD! Punish the wicked, O God! Do not ignore the helpless! |
| 13Why do the wicked despise God and say to themselves, "God will not seek justice."? | 13Why do the wicked get away with despising God? They think, “God will never call us to account.” |
| 14But you do see! You take note of trouble and grief in order to take the matter into your own hand. The helpless one commits himself to you; you have been the orphan's helper. | 14But you see the trouble and grief they cause. You take note of it and punish them. The helpless put their trust in you. You defend the orphans. |
| 15Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; so that when you seek out his wickedness you will find it no more. | 15Break the arms of these wicked, evil people! Go after them until the last one is destroyed. |
| 16The LORD is king forever and ever; nations will perish from his land. | 16The LORD is king forever and ever! The godless nations will vanish from the land. |
| 17LORD, you heard the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen them, you will listen carefully, | 17LORD, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them. |
| 18to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that men of the earth may cause terror no more. | 18You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed, so mere people can no longer terrify them. |
