International Standard VersionNET Bible
"Watch out! The LORD is about to depopulate the land and devastate it; he will turn it upside down and scatter its inhabitants.1Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants.
It will be the same for the lay people as for priests, the same for servants as for their masters, for female servants as for their mistresses, for buyers as for sellers, for lenders as for borrowers, and for creditors as for debtors.2Everyone will suffer--the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor.
The earth will be utterly depopulated and completely laid waste — for the LORD has spoken this message. 3The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment.
"The earth dries up and withers; the world languishes and fades away; heaven fades away, along with the earth. 4The earth dries up and withers, the world shrivels up and withers; the prominent people of the earth fade away.
The earth lies defiled beneath its inhabitants; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.5The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty.
Therefore the curse keeps on consuming, and its inhabitants are declared guilty. Furthermore, the inhabitants of earth are ablaze, and few people are left.6So a treaty curse devours the earth; its inhabitants pay for their guilt. This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, and are reduced to just a handful of people.
The new wine evaporates; the vine and the oil dry up; all the merrymakers groan.7The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan.
"The celebrations of the tambourine have ended, the noise of the jubilant has stopped, and the mirth that the harp produces has ended.8The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases.
No longer do they drink wine accompanied by singing; even beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.9They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.
The chaotic city lies broken down; every house is closed up so that no one can enter them. 10The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight.
There is an outcry in the streets over wine; all cheer turns to gloom; the fun times of the earth are banished.11They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth.
Desolation remains in the city whose gates lie battered into ruins.12The city is left in ruins; the gate is reduced to rubble.
So it will be on the earth and among the nations— as when an olive tree is beaten, or as gleanings when the grape harvest has ended."13This is what will happen throughout the earth, among the nations. It will be like when they beat an olive tree, and just a few olives are left at the end of the harvest.
"They raise their voices; they shout for joy; from the west they shout aloud over the LORD's majesty.14They lift their voices and shout joyfully; they praise the majesty of the LORD in the west.
Therefore, you in the east, give glory to the LORD! You in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD God of Israel!15So in the east extol the LORD, along the seacoasts extol the fame of the LORD God of Israel.
From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise: 'Glory to the Righteous One!' "But I say, 'I am pining away, I'm pining away. How terrible things are for me! For treacherous people betray— treacherous people are betraying with treachery!'"16From the ends of the earth we hear songs--the Just One is majestic. But I say, "I'm wasting away! I'm wasting away! I'm doomed! Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!"
"Terror and pit and snare are coming in your direction, you inhabitants of the earth!17Terror, pit, and snare are ready to overtake you inhabitants of the earth!
Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. For the windows of judgment from above are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.18The one who runs away from the sound of the terror will fall into the pit; the one who climbs out of the pit, will be trapped by the snare. For the floodgates of the heavens are opened up and the foundations of the earth shake.
The earth is utterly shattered, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken.19The earth is broken in pieces, the earth is ripped to shreds, the earth shakes violently.
The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies so heavy upon it, that it falls, never to rise again.20The earth will stagger around like a drunk; it will sway back and forth like a hut in a windstorm. Its sin will weigh it down, and it will fall and never get up again.
"And it will come about at that time, the LORD will punish the armies of the exalted ones in the heavens, and the rulers of the earth on earth.21At that time the LORD will punish the heavenly forces in the heavens and the earthly kings on the earth.
They will be herded together into the Pit; they will be shut up in prison, and after many days they will be punished.22They will be imprisoned in a pit, locked up in a prison, and after staying there for a long time, they will be punished.
Then the moon will be embarrassed and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem; and in the presence of its elders there will be glory."23The full moon will be covered up, the bright sun will be darkened; for the LORD who commands armies will rule on Mount Zion in Jerusalem in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor.
