So all the generations from Abraham to David totaled fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon totaled fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah there were fourteen generations.17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to Christ, fourteen generations.
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah happened in this way. When his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they lived together she was discovered to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to disgrace her, decided to divorce her secretly.19Because Joseph, her husband to be, was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her, he intended to divorce her privately.
After he had thought about it, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David," he said, "don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 20When he had contemplated this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he is the one who will save his people from their sins."21She will give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Now all this happened to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said,22This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled:
"See, a virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel," which means, "God with us." 23"Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call him Emmanuel," which means "God with us."
When Joseph got up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary as his wife. 24When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord told him. He took his wife,
He did not have marital relations with her until she had given birth to a son; and he named him Jesus.25but did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth to a son, whom he named Jesus.
