Abram traveled from Egypt, along with his wife and everyone who belonged to his household —including Lot—to the Negev. 1So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him.
Now Abram had become quite wealthy in livestock, silver, and gold. 2Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.
He journeyed by stages from the Negev to Bethel, the place where his tent had formerly been, between Bethel and Ai, 3From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier
where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.4and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.
Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks of sheep, herds, and tents. 5Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.
But the land could not support them living together, because they had so many livestock that they could not stay together. 6But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.
There was strife between the herdsmen in charge of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen in charge of Lot's livestock. Also, at that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.7And quarreling arose between Abram's herders and Lot's. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.
So Abram told Lot, "Please, let's not have strife between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives.8So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.
Isn't the whole land available to you? Let's separate: If you go to the left, then I will go to the right; if you go to the right, then I will go to the left."9Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left."
Lot looked around and noticed that the whole Jordan plain as far as Zoar was well-watered like the garden of the LORD or like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 10Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan plain. Then Lot traveled eastward, and they separated from each other.11So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:
So Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the plain, setting up his tent in the vicinity of Sodom. 12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.
Now the men of Sodom were particularly evil and sinful in their defiance of the LORD.13Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.
After Lot had separated from Abram, the LORD told Abram, "Look off to the north, south , east, and west from where you're living, 14The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.
because I'm going to give you and your descendants all of the land that you see—forever! 15All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.
I'll make your descendants as plentiful as the specks of dust of the earth, so that if one could count the specks of dust of the earth, then your descendants could also be counted. 16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.
Get up! Walk throughout the length and breadth of the land, because I'm going to give it to you."17Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."
So Abram moved his tent and settled beside the oaks of Mamre that are by Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.18So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the LORD.
