| 1But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: | 1But you are to proclaim things consistent with sound teaching. |
| 2That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. | 2Older men are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. |
| 3The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; | 3In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking. They are to teach what is good, |
| 4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, |
| 5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. | 5to be self-controlled, pure, workers at home, kind, and in submission to their husbands, so that God's word will not be slandered. |
| 6Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. | 6In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled |
| 7In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, | 7in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching. |
| 8Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. | 8Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that any opponent will be ashamed, because he doesn't have anything bad to say about us. |
| 9Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; | 9Slaves are to submit to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back |
| 10Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. | 10or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in everything. |
| 11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, | 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, |
| 12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; | 12instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, |
| 13Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; | 13while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. |
| 14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. | 14He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works. |
| 15These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. | 15Proclaim these things; encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. |
