The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.1Solomon's proverbs: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son, heartache to his mother.
Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.2Ill-gotten gains do not profit anyone, but righteousness rescues from death.
The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.3The LORD will not let the righteous go hungry, but He denies the wicked what they crave.
He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.4Idle hands make one poor, but diligent hands bring riches.
He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.5The son who gathers during summer is prudent; the son who sleeps during harvest is disgraceful.
Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.6Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.7The remembrance of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.
The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.8A wise heart accepts commands, but foolish lips will be destroyed.
He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.9The one who lives with integrity lives securely, but whoever perverts his ways will be found out.
He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.10A sly wink of the eye causes grief, and foolish lips will be destroyed.
The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.11The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.12Hatred stirs up conflicts, but love covers all offenses.
In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.13Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of the one who lacks sense.
Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.14The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of the fool hastens destruction.
The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.15A rich man's wealth is his fortified city; the poverty of the poor is their destruction.
The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.16The labor of the righteous leads to life; the activity of the wicked leads to sin.
He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.17The one who follows instruction is on the path to life, but the one who rejects correction goes astray.
He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.18The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.19When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is wise.
The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.20The tongue of the righteous is pure silver; the heart of the wicked is of little value.
The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.21The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense.
The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.22The LORD's blessing enriches, and struggle adds nothing to it.
It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.23As shameful conduct is pleasure for a fool, so wisdom is for a man of understanding.
The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.24What the wicked dreads will come to him, but what the righteous desire will be given to them.
As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.25When the whirlwind passes, the wicked are no more, but the righteous are secure forever.
As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.26Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so the slacker is to the one who sends him on an errand.
The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.27The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.
The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.28The hope of the righteous is joy, but the expectation of the wicked comes to nothing.
The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.29The way of the LORD is a stronghold for the honorable, but destruction awaits the malicious.
The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.30The righteous will never be shaken, but the wicked will not remain on the earth.
The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.31The mouth of the righteous produces wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out.
The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.32The lips of the righteous know what is appropriate, but the mouth of the wicked, only what is perverse.
