And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,1It was while Apollos was in Corinth that Paul passed through the inland districts and came to Ephesus. He found a few disciples there
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.2and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered him, "No, we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.3He then asked, "Then into what were you baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism."
Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.4Then Paul said, "John baptized when they repented, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus."
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.6When Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in foreign languages and to prophesy.
And all the men were about twelve.7There were about twelve men in all.
And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.8He went into the synagogue and spoke there boldly for three months, holding discussions and persuading those who heard him about the kingdom of God.
But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.9But when some people became stubborn, refused to believe, and slandered the Way in front of the people, Paul left them, taking his disciples away with him, and held daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.10This went on for two years, so that all who lived in Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the word of the Lord.
And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:11God continued to do extraordinary miracles through Paul.
So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.12When handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched his skin were taken to the sick, their diseases left them and evil spirits went out of them.
Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.13Then some Jews who went around trying to drive out demons attempted to use the name of the Lord Jesus on those who had evil spirits, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches!"
And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.14Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this.
And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?15But the evil spirit told them, "Jesus I know, and I am getting acquainted with Paul, but who are you?"
And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.16Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them, got the better of them, and so violently overpowered all of them that they fled out of the house naked and bruised.
And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.17When this became known to everyone living in Ephesus, Jews and Greeks alike, they all became terrified, and the name of the Lord Jesus began to be held in high honor.
And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.18Many who became believers kept coming to confess and talk about what they had been doing.
Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.19Moreover, many people who had practiced occult arts gathered their books and burned them in front of everybody. They estimated their value and found them to have been worth 50,000 silver coins.
So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.20In that way the word of the Lord kept spreading and triumphing.
After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.21After these things had happened, Paul decided to go through Macedonia and Achaia and then to go on to Jerusalem. "After I have gone there," he told them, "I must also see Rome."
So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.22Then he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he himself stayed in Asia a while longer.
And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.23Now about that time a great commotion broke out concerning the Way.
For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;24By making silver shrines of Artemis, a silversmith named Demetrius provided a large income for skilled workers.
Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.25He called a meeting of these men and others who were engaged in similar trades and said, "Men, you well know that we get a good income from this business.
Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:26You also see and hear that, not only in Ephesus, but almost all over Asia, this man Paul has won over and taken away a large crowd by telling them that gods made by human hands are not gods at all.
So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.27There is a danger not only that our business will lose its reputation but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be brought into disrepute and that she will be robbed of her majesty that brought all Asia and the world to worship her."
And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.28When they heard this, they became furious and began to shout, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.29The city was filled with confusion, and the people rushed into the theater together, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's fellow travelers from Macedonia.
And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.30Paul wanted to go into the crowd, but the disciples wouldn't let him.
And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.31Even some officials of the province of Asia who were his friends sent him a message urging him not to risk his life in the theater.
Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.32Meanwhile, some were shouting one thing and some another, since the crowd was confused, and most of them didn't know why they were meeting.
And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.33Some of the crowd concluded it was because of Alexander, since the Jews had pushed him to the front. So Alexander motioned for silence and tried to make a defense before the people.
But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.34But when they found out that he was a Jew, they all started to shout in unison for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?35When the city recorder had quieted the crowd, he said, "Men of Ephesus, who in the world doesn't know that this city of Ephesus is the keeper of the temple of the great Artemis and of the statue that fell down from heaven?
Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.36Since these things cannot be denied, you must be quiet and not do anything reckless.
For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.37For you have brought these men here, although they neither rob temples nor blaspheme our goddess.
Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.38So if Demetrius and his workers have a charge against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They should accuse one another there.
But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.39But if you want anything else, it must be settled in the regular assembly,
For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.40because we are in danger of being charged with rioting today, and there is no good reason we can give to justify this commotion."
And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.41After saying this, he dismissed the assembly.
