Deuteronomy 19

King James BibleNET Bible
When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;1When the LORD your God destroys the nations whose land he is about to give you and you dispossess them and settle in their cities and houses,
Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.2you must set apart for yourselves three cities in the middle of your land that the LORD your God is giving you as a possession.
Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.3You shall build a roadway and divide into thirds the whole extent of your land that the LORD your God is providing as your inheritance; anyone who kills another person should flee to the closest of these cities.
And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;4Now this is the law pertaining to one who flees there in order to live, if he has accidentally killed another without hating him at the time of the accident.
As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:5Suppose he goes with someone else to the forest to cut wood and when he raises the ax to cut the tree, the ax head flies loose from the handle and strikes his fellow worker so hard that he dies. The person responsible may then flee to one of these cities to save himself.
Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.6Otherwise the blood avenger will chase after the killer in the heat of his anger, eventually overtake him, and kill him, though this is not a capital case since he did not hate him at the time of the accident.
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.7Therefore, I am commanding you to set apart for yourselves three cities.
And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;8If the LORD your God enlarges your borders as he promised your ancestors and gives you all the land he pledged to them,
If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:9and then you are careful to observe all these commandments I am giving you today (namely, to love the LORD your God and to always walk in his ways), then you must add three more cities to these three.
That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.10You must not shed innocent blood in your land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, for that would make you guilty.
But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:11However, suppose a person hates someone else and stalks him, attacks him, kills him, and then flees to one of these cities.
Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.12The elders of his own city must send for him and remove him from there to deliver him over to the blood avenger to die.
Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.13You must not pity him, but purge out the blood of the innocent from Israel, so that it may go well with you.
Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.14You must not encroach on your neighbor's property, which will have been defined in the inheritance you will obtain in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.15A single witness may not testify against another person for any trespass or sin that he commits. A matter may be legally established only on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;16If a false witness testifies against another person and accuses him of a crime,
Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;17then both parties to the controversy must stand before the LORD, that is, before the priests and judges who will be in office in those days.
And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;18The judges will thoroughly investigate the matter, and if the witness should prove to be false and to have given false testimony against the accused,
Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.19you must do to him what he had intended to do to the accused. In this way you will purge evil from among you.
And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.20The rest of the people will hear and become afraid to keep doing such evil among you.
And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.21You must not show pity; the principle will be a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, and a foot for a foot.
