The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.1This is the burden against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz received:
Lift up a standard on the bare hill, Raise your voice to them, Wave the hand that they may enter the doors of the nobles.2Raise a banner on a barren hilltop; call aloud to them. Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles.
I have commanded My consecrated ones, I have even called My mighty warriors, My proudly exulting ones, To execute My anger.3I have commanded My sanctified ones; I have even summoned My warriors to execute My wrath and exult in My triumph.
A sound of tumult on the mountains, Like that of many people! A sound of the uproar of kingdoms, Of nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts is mustering the army for battle.4Listen, a tumult on the mountains, like that of a great multitude! Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! The LORD of Hosts is mobilizing an army for war.
They are coming from a far country, From the farthest horizons, The LORD and His instruments of indignation, To destroy the whole land.5They are coming from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens—the LORD and the weapons of His wrath—to destroy the whole country.
Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.6Wail, for the Day of the LORD is near; it will come as destruction from the Almighty.
Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man's heart will melt.7Therefore all hands will fall limp, and every man’s heart will melt.
They will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame.8Terror, pain, and anguish will seize them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look at one another, their faces flushed with fear.
Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it.9Behold, the Day of the LORD is coming—cruel, with fury and burning anger—to make the earth a desolation and to destroy the sinners within it.
For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it rises And the moon will not shed its light.10For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not give their light. The rising sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light.
Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.11I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity. I will end the haughtiness of the arrogant and lay low the pride of the ruthless.
I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold And mankind than the gold of Ophir.12I will make man scarcer than pure gold, and mankind rarer than the gold of Ophir.
Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In the day of His burning anger.13Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken from its place at the wrath of the LORD of Hosts on the day of His burning anger.
And it will be that like a hunted gazelle, Or like sheep with none to gather them, They will each turn to his own people, And each one flee to his own land.14Like a hunted gazelle, like a sheep without a shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will flee to his native land.
Anyone who is found will be thrust through, And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword.15Whoever is caught will be stabbed, and whoever is captured will die by the sword.
Their little ones also will be dashed to pieces Before their eyes; Their houses will be plundered And their wives ravished.16Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes, their houses will be looted, and their wives will be ravished.
Behold, I am going to stir up the Medes against them, Who will not value silver or take pleasure in gold.17Behold, I will stir up against them the Medes, who have no regard for silver and no desire for gold.
And their bows will mow down the young men, They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb, Nor will their eye pity children.18Their bows will dash young men to pieces; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb; they will not look with pity on the children.
And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans' pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.19And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.
It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation; Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there, Nor will shepherds make their flocks lie down there.20She will never be inhabited or settled from generation to generation; no nomad will pitch his tent there, no shepherd will rest his flock there.
But desert creatures will lie down there, And their houses will be full of owls; Ostriches also will live there, and shaggy goats will frolic there.21But desert creatures will lie down there, and howling creatures will fill her houses. Ostriches will dwell there, and wild goats will leap about.
Hyenas will howl in their fortified towers And jackals in their luxurious palaces. Her fateful time also will soon come And her days will not be prolonged.22Hyenas will howl in her fortresses and jackals in her luxurious palaces. Babylon’s time is at hand, and her days will not be prolonged.
