Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,1When humankind began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,
that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.2the sons of God saw that the daughters of humankind were beautiful. Thus they took wives for themselves from any they chose.
Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years."3So the LORD said, "My spirit will not remain in humankind indefinitely, since they are mortal. They will remain for 120 more years."
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days (and also after this) when the sons of God were having sexual relations with the daughters of humankind, who gave birth to their children. They were the mighty heroes of old, the famous men.
Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.5But the LORD saw that the wickedness of humankind had become great on the earth. Every inclination of the thoughts of their minds was only evil all the time.
The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.6The LORD regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly offended.
The LORD said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them."7So the LORD said, "I will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth--everything from humankind to animals, including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them."
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.8But Noah found favor in the sight of the LORD.
These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.9This is the account of Noah. Noah was a godly man; he was blameless among his contemporaries. He walked with God.
Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.10Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.11The earth was ruined in the sight of God; the earth was filled with violence.
God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.12God saw the earth, and indeed it was ruined, for all living creatures on the earth were sinful.
Then God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.13So God said to Noah, "I have decided that all living creatures must die, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Now I am about to destroy them and the earth.
"Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch.14Make for yourself an ark of cypress wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it with pitch inside and out.
"This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.15This is how you should make it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.
"You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.16Make a roof for the ark and finish it, leaving 18 inches from the top. Put a door in the side of the ark, and make lower, middle, and upper decks.
"Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.17I am about to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy from under the sky all the living creatures that have the breath of life in them. Everything that is on the earth will die,
"But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark-- you and your sons and your wife, and your sons' wives with you.18but I will confirm my covenant with you. You will enter the ark--you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
"And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.19You must bring into the ark two of every kind of living creature from all flesh, male and female, to keep them alive with you.
"Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.20Of the birds after their kinds, and of the cattle after their kinds, and of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you so you can keep them alive.
"As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them."21And you must take for yourself every kind of food that is eaten, and gather it together. It will be food for you and for them.
Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.22And Noah did all that God commanded him--he did indeed.
