Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' servant, saying,1After Moses the LORD's servant died, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' assistant:
"Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel.2"Moses my servant is dead. Get ready! Cross the Jordan River! Lead these people into the land which I am ready to hand over to them.
"Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses.3I am handing over to you every place you set foot, as I promised Moses.
"From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory.4Your territory will extend from the wilderness in the south to Lebanon in the north. It will extend all the way to the great River Euphrates in the east (including all of Syria) and all the way to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
"No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.5No one will be able to resist you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not abandon you or leave you alone.
"Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.6Be strong and brave! You must lead these people in the conquest of this land that I solemnly promised their ancestors I would hand over to them.
"Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.7Make sure you are very strong and brave! Carefully obey all the law my servant Moses charged you to keep! Do not swerve from it to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful in all you do.
"This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.8This law scroll must not leave your lips! You must memorize it day and night so you can carefully obey all that is written in it. Then you will prosper and be successful.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."9I repeat, be strong and brave! Don't be afraid and don't panic, for I, the LORD your God, am with you in all you do."
Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,10Joshua instructed the leaders of the people:
"Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, saying, 'Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you are to cross this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you, to possess it.'"11"Go through the camp and command the people, 'Prepare your supplies, for within three days you will cross the Jordan River and begin the conquest of the land the LORD your God is ready to hand over to you.'"
To the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said,12Joshua told the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh:
"Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, 'The LORD your God gives you rest and will give you this land.'13"Remember what Moses the LORD's servant commanded you. The LORD your God is giving you a place to settle and is handing this land over to you.
"Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle shall remain in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but you shall cross before your brothers in battle array, all your valiant warriors, and shall help them,14Your wives, children and cattle may stay in the land that Moses assigned to you east of the Jordan River. But all you warriors must cross over armed for battle ahead of your brothers. You must help them
until the LORD gives your brothers rest, as He gives you, and they also possess the land which the LORD your God is giving them. Then you shall return to your own land, and possess that which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise."15until the LORD gives your brothers a place like yours to settle and they conquer the land the LORD your God is ready to hand over to them. Then you may go back to your allotted land and occupy the land Moses the LORD's servant assigned you east of the Jordan."
They answered Joshua, saying, "All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.16They told Joshua, "We will do everything you say. We will go wherever you send us.
"Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you; only may the LORD your God be with you as He was with Moses.17Just as we obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. But may the LORD your God be with you as he was with Moses!
"Anyone who rebels against your command and does not obey your words in all that you command him, shall be put to death; only be strong and courageous."18Any man who rebels against what you say and does not obey all your commands will be executed. But be strong and brave!"
