Now these are the records of the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.1This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses at the time the LORD spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai.
These then are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.2The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests.3Those were the names of Aaron's sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests.
But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron.4Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the LORD when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai. They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,5The LORD said to Moses,
"Bring the tribe of Levi near and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.6"Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him.
"They shall perform the duties for him and for the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.7They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the tent of meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle.
"They shall also keep all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.8They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle.
"You shall thus give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the sons of Israel.9Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him.
"So you shall appoint Aaron and his sons that they may keep their priesthood, but the layman who comes near shall be put to death."10Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death."
Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,11The LORD also said to Moses,
"Now, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn, the first issue of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine.12"I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine,
"For all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, from man to beast. They shall be Mine; I am the LORD."13for all the firstborn are mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal. They are to be mine. I am the LORD."
Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,14The LORD said to Moses in the Desert of Sinai,
"Number the sons of Levi by their fathers' households, by their families; every male from a month old and upward you shall number."15"Count the Levites by their families and clans. Count every male a month old or more."
So Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, just as he had been commanded.16So Moses counted them, as he was commanded by the word of the LORD.
These then are the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari.17These were the names of the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei;18These were the names of the Gershonite clans: Libni and Shimei.
and the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel;19The Kohathite clans: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.
and the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' households.20The Merarite clans: Mahli and Mushi. These were the Levite clans, according to their families.
Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites; these were the families of the Gershonites.21To Gershon belonged the clans of the Libnites and Shimeites; these were the Gershonite clans.
Their numbered men, in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, even their numbered men were 7,500.22The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 7,500.
The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward,23The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle.
and the leader of the fathers' households of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael.24The leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael.
Now the duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting,25At the tent of meeting the Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle and tent, its coverings, the curtain at the entrance to the tent of meeting,
and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, according to all the service concerning them.26the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, and the ropes--and everything related to their use.
Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.27To Kohath belonged the clans of the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites and Uzzielites; these were the Kohathite clans.
In the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, there were 8,600, performing the duties of the sanctuary.28The number of all the males a month old or more was 8,600. The Kohathites were responsible for the care of the sanctuary.
The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the southward side of the tabernacle,29The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle.
and the leader of the fathers' households of the Kohathite families was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.30The leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.
Now their duties involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all the service concerning them;31They were responsible for the care of the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain, and everything related to their use.
and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was the chief of the leaders of Levi, and had the oversight of those who perform the duties of the sanctuary.32The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible for the care of the sanctuary.
Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.33To Merari belonged the clans of the Mahlites and the Mushites; these were the Merarite clans.
Their numbered men in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, were 6,200.34The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 6,200.
The leader of the fathers' households of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to camp on the northward side of the tabernacle.35The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.
Now the appointed duties of the sons of Merari involved the frames of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, all its equipment, and the service concerning them,36The Merarites were appointed to take care of the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts, bases, all its equipment, and everything related to their use,
and the pillars around the court with their sockets and their pegs and their cords.37as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs and ropes.
Now those who were to camp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, are Moses and Aaron and his sons, performing the duties of the sanctuary for the obligation of the sons of Israel; but the layman coming near was to be put to death.38Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, in front of the tent of meeting. They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.
All the numbered men of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the command of the LORD by their families, every male from a month old and upward, were 22,000.39The total number of Levites counted at the LORD's command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000.
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and make a list of their names.40The LORD said to Moses, "Count all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more and make a list of their names.
"You shall take the Levites for Me, I am the LORD, instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the sons of Israel."41Take the Levites for me in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites. I am the LORD."
So Moses numbered all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, just as the LORD had commanded him;42So Moses counted all the firstborn of the Israelites, as the LORD commanded him.
and all the firstborn males by the number of names from a month old and upward, for their numbered men were 22,273.43The total number of firstborn males a month old or more, listed by name, was 22,273.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,44The LORD also said to Moses,
"Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel and the cattle of the Levites. And the Levites shall be Mine; I am the LORD.45"Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine. I am the LORD.
"For the ransom of the 273 of the firstborn of the sons of Israel who are in excess beyond the Levites,46To redeem the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites,
you shall take five shekels apiece, per head; you shall take them in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs),47collect five shekels for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs.
and give the money, the ransom of those who are in excess among them, to Aaron and to his sons."48Give the money for the redemption of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons."
So Moses took the ransom money from those who were in excess, beyond those ransomed by the Levites;49So Moses collected the redemption money from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites.
from the firstborn of the sons of Israel he took the money in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, 1,365.50From the firstborn of the Israelites he collected silver weighing 1,365 shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel.
Then Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and to his sons, at the command of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.51Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, as he was commanded by the word of the LORD.
