While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the commander of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,1While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,
angry because they were teaching the people and announcing in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.2greatly disturbed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
So they seized them and put them in jail until the next day (for it was already evening).3They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in custody until the next day.
But many of those who had listened to the message believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 4But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.
On the next day, their rulers, elders, and experts in the law came together in Jerusalem.5The next day the rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem,
Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest's family.6along with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and many others from the high priest’s family.
After making Peter and John stand in their midst, they began to inquire, "By what power or by what name did you do this?"7They had Peter and John brought in and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied, "Rulers of the people and elders,8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people!
if we are being examined today for a good deed done to a sick man--by what means this man was healed--9If we are being examined today about a kind service to a man who was lame, to determine how he was healed,
let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands before you healthy.10then let this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, that has become the cornerstone.11This Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved." 12Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and discovered that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized these men had been with Jesus.13When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they marveled and took note that these men had been with Jesus.
And because they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against this.14And seeing the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in response.
But when they had ordered them to go outside the council, they began to confer with one another,15So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
saying, "What should we do with these men? For it is plain to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable miraculous sign has come about through them, and we cannot deny it.16“What shall we do with these men?” they asked. “It is clear to everyone living in Jerusalem that a remarkable miracle has occurred through them, and we cannot deny it.
But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name."17But to keep this message from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in this name.”
And they called them in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.18Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John replied, "Whether it is right before God to obey you rather than God, you decide,19But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God.
for it is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard."20For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
After threatening them further, they released them, for they could not find how to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising God for what had happened.21After further threats they let them go. They could not find a way to punish them, because all the people were glorifying God for what had happened.
For the man, on whom this miraculous sign of healing had been performed, was over forty years old. 22For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
When they were released, Peter and John went to their fellow believers and reported everything the high priests and the elders had said to them.23On their release, Peter and John returned to their own people and reported everything that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
When they heard this, they raised their voices to God with one mind and said, "Master of all, you who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them,24When the believers heard this, they lifted up their voices to God with one accord. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “You made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.
who said by the Holy Spirit through your servant David our forefather, 'Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot foolish things? 25You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth stood together, and the rulers assembled together, against the Lord and against his Christ.' 26The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against His Anointed One.’
"For indeed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,27In fact, this is the very city where Herod and Pontius Pilate conspired with the Gentiles and the people of Israel against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed.
to do as much as your power and your plan had decided beforehand would happen.28They carried out what Your hand and will had decided beforehand would happen.
And now, Lord, pay attention to their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your message with great courage,29And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness,
while you extend your hand to heal, and to bring about miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."30as You stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”
When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God courageously. 31After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
The group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but everything was held in common.32The multitude of believers was one in heart and soul. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they owned.
With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all.33With great power the apostles continued to give their testimony about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And abundant grace was upon them all.
For there was no one needy among them, because those who were owners of land or houses were selling them and bringing the proceeds from the sales34There were no needy ones among them, because those who owned lands or houses would sell their property, bring the proceeds from the sales,
and placing them at the apostles' feet. The proceeds were distributed to each, as anyone had need.35and lay them at the apostles’ feet for distribution to anyone as he had need.
So Joseph, a Levite who was a native of Cyprus, called by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated "son of encouragement"),36Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (meaning Son of Encouragement),
sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and placed it at the apostles' feet. 37sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
