While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the commander of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,1Now as they were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,
angry because they were teaching the people and announcing in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.2because they were provoked that they were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection from the dead, using Jesus as the example.
So they seized them and put them in jail until the next day (for it was already evening).3So they seized them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening.
But many of those who had listened to the message believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 4But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men came to about 5,000.
On the next day, their rulers, elders, and experts in the law came together in Jerusalem.5The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem
Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest's family.6with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John and Alexander, and all the members of the high-priestly family.
After making Peter and John stand in their midst, they began to inquire, "By what power or by what name did you do this?"7After they had Peter and John stand before them, they asked the question: "By what power or in what name have you done this?"
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied, "Rulers of the people and elders,8Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders:
if we are being examined today for a good deed done to a sick man--by what means this man was healed--9If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man--by what means he was healed--
let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands before you healthy.10let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene--whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead--by Him this man is standing here before you healthy.
This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, that has become the cornerstone.11This Jesus is the stone rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone.
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved." 12There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people, and we must be saved by it."
When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and discovered that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized these men had been with Jesus.13When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.
And because they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against this.14And since they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in response.
But when they had ordered them to go outside the council, they began to confer with one another,15After they had ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, they conferred among themselves,
saying, "What should we do with these men? For it is plain to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable miraculous sign has come about through them, and we cannot deny it.16saying, "What should we do with these men? For an obvious sign, evident to all who live in Jerusalem, has been done through them, and we cannot deny it!
But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name."17However, so this does not spread any further among the people, let's threaten them against speaking to anyone in this name again."
And they called them in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.18So they called for them and ordered them not to preach or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John replied, "Whether it is right before God to obey you rather than God, you decide,19But Peter and John answered them, "Whether it's right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide;
for it is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard."20for we are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."
After threatening them further, they released them, for they could not find how to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising God for what had happened.21After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them, because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done;
For the man, on whom this miraculous sign of healing had been performed, was over forty years old. 22for this sign of healing had been performed on a man over 40 years old.
When they were released, Peter and John went to their fellow believers and reported everything the high priests and the elders had said to them.23After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
When they heard this, they raised their voices to God with one mind and said, "Master of all, you who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them,24When they heard this, they all raised their voices to God and said, "Master, You are the One who made the heaven, the earth, and the sea, and everything in them.
who said by the Holy Spirit through your servant David our forefather, 'Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot foolish things? 25You said through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David Your servant: Why did the Gentiles rage and the peoples plot futile things?
The kings of the earth stood together, and the rulers assembled together, against the Lord and against his Christ.' 26The kings of the earth took their stand and the rulers assembled together against the Lord and against His Messiah."
"For indeed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,27For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed,
to do as much as your power and your plan had decided beforehand would happen.28to do whatever Your hand and Your plan had predestined to take place.
And now, Lord, pay attention to their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your message with great courage,29And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that Your slaves may speak Your message with complete boldness,
while you extend your hand to heal, and to bring about miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."30while You stretch out Your hand for healing, signs, and wonders to be performed through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus."
When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God courageously. 31When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak God's message with boldness.
The group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but everything was held in common.32Now the large group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common.
With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all.33And the apostles were giving testimony with great power to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.
For there was no one needy among them, because those who were owners of land or houses were selling them and bringing the proceeds from the sales34For there was not a needy person among them, because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of the things that were sold,
and placing them at the apostles' feet. The proceeds were distributed to each, as anyone had need.35and laid them at the apostles' feet. This was then distributed for each person's basic needs.
So Joseph, a Levite who was a native of Cyprus, called by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated "son of encouragement"),36Joseph, a Levite and a Cypriot by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas, which is translated Son of Encouragement,
sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and placed it at the apostles' feet. 37sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
