You must love the LORD your God and do what he requires; keep his statutes, ordinances, and commandments at all times.1"Therefore, love the LORD your God and always keep his mandate and his statutes, ordinances, and commands.
Bear in mind today that I am not speaking to your children who have not personally experienced the judgments of the LORD your God, which revealed his greatness, strength, and power.2Understand today that it is not your children who experienced or saw the discipline of the LORD your God: His greatness, strong hand, and outstretched arm;
They did not see the awesome deeds he performed in the midst of Egypt against Pharaoh king of Egypt and his whole land,3his signs and the works he did in Egypt to Pharaoh king of Egypt and all his land;
or what he did to the army of Egypt, including their horses and chariots, when he made the waters of the Red Sea overwhelm them while they were pursuing you and he annihilated them.4what he did to Egypt's army, its horses and chariots, when he made the water of the Red Sea flow over them as they pursued you, and he destroyed them completely;
They did not see what he did to you in the desert before you reached this place,5what he did to you in the wilderness until you reached this place;
or what he did to Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when the earth opened its mouth in the middle of the Israelite camp and swallowed them, their families, their tents, and all the property they brought with them.6and what he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when in the middle of the whole Israelite camp the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, their tents, and every living thing with them.
I am speaking to you because you are the ones who saw all the great deeds of the LORD! 7Your own eyes have seen every great work the LORD has done.
Now pay attention to all the commandments I am giving you today, so that you may be strong enough to enter and possess the land where you are headed,8"Keep every command I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to cross into and possess the land you are to inherit,
and that you may enjoy long life in the land the LORD promised to give to your ancestors and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.9and so that you may live long in the land the LORD swore to your fathers to give them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.
For the land where you are headed is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, a land where you planted seed and which you irrigated by hand like a vegetable garden.10For the land you are entering to possess is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and irrigated by hand as in a vegetable garden.
Instead, the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy is one of hills and valleys, a land that drinks in water from the rains,11But the land you are entering to possess is a land of mountains and valleys, watered by rain from the sky.
a land the LORD your God looks after. He is constantly attentive to it from the beginning to the end of the year.12It is a land the LORD your God cares for. He is always watching over it from the beginning to the end of the year.
Now, if you pay close attention to my commandments that I am giving you today and love the LORD your God and serve him with all your mind and being,13"If you carefully obey my commands I am giving you today, to love the LORD your God and worship him with all your heart and all your soul,
then he promises, "I will send rain for your land in its season, the autumn and the spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine, and olive oil.14I will provide rain for your land in the proper time, the autumn and spring rains, and you will harvest your grain, new wine, and fresh oil.
I will provide pasture for your livestock and you will eat your fill." 15I will provide grass in your fields for your livestock. You will eat and be satisfied.
Make sure you do not turn away to serve and worship other gods!16Be careful that you are not enticed to turn aside, serve, and bow in worship to other gods.
Then the anger of the LORD will erupt against you and he will close up the sky so that it does not rain. The land will not yield its produce, and you will soon be removed from the good land that the Lord is about to give you.17Then the LORD's anger will burn against you. He will shut the sky, and there will be no rain; the land will not yield its produce, and you will perish quickly from the good land the LORD is giving you.
Fix these words of mine into your mind and being, and tie them as a reminder on your hands and let them be symbols on your forehead.18"Imprint these words of mine on your hearts and minds, bind them as a sign on your hands, and let them be a symbol on your foreheads.
Teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.19Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Inscribe them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates20Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates,
so that your days and those of your descendants may be extended in the land which the LORD promised to give to your ancestors, like the days of heaven itself.21so that as long as the heavens are above the earth, your days and those of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your fathers.
For if you carefully observe all of these commandments I am giving you and love the LORD your God, live according to his standards, and remain loyal to him,22For if you carefully observe every one of these commands I am giving you to follow--to love the LORD your God, walk in all his ways, and remain faithful to him--
then he will drive out all these nations ahead of you, and you will dispossess nations greater and stronger than you.23the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will drive out nations greater and stronger than you are.
Every place you set your foot will be yours; your border will extend from the desert to Lebanon and from the River (that is, the Euphrates) as far as the Mediterranean Sea.24Every place the sole of your foot treads will be yours. Your territory will extend from the wilderness to Lebanon and from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea.
Nobody will be able to resist you; the LORD your God will spread the fear and terror of you over the whole land on which you walk, just as he promised you. 25No one will be able to stand against you; the LORD your God will put fear and dread of you in all the land where you set foot, as he has promised you.
Take note--I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse:26"Look, today I set before you a blessing and a curse:
the blessing if you take to heart the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you today,27there will be a blessing, if you obey the commands of the LORD your God I am giving you today,
and the curse if you pay no attention to his commandments and turn from the way I am setting before you today to pursue other gods you have not known.28and a curse, if you do not obey the commands of the LORD your God and you turn aside from the path I command you today by following other gods you have not known.
When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are to possess, you must pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.29When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim the blessing at Mount Gerizim and the curse at Mount Ebal.
Are they not across the Jordan River, toward the west, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah opposite Gilgal near the oak of Moreh?30Aren't these mountains across the Jordan, beyond the western road in the land of the Canaanites, who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, near the oaks of Moreh?
For you are about to cross the Jordan to possess the land the LORD your God is giving you, and you will possess and inhabit it.31For you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you. When you possess it and settle in it,
Be certain to keep all the statutes and ordinances that I am presenting to you today. 32be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances I set before you today.
