Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish1Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish:
and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. 2I called to the LORD in my distress, and he answered me. I cried out for help from deep inside Sheol; you heard my voice.
You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. 3You threw me into the depths, into the heart of the seas, and the current overcame me. All your breakers and your billows swept over me.
I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! 4But I said, "I have been banished from your sight, yet I will look once more toward your holy temple.
Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 5The water engulfed me up to the neck; the watery depths overcame me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. 6I sank to the foundations of the mountains, the earth's gates shut behind me forever! Then you raised my life from the Pit, LORD my God!
When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. 7As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer came to you, to your holy temple.
Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. 8Those who cherish worthless idols abandon their faithful love,
But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" 9but as for me, I will sacrifice to you with a voice of thanksgiving. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation belongs to the LORD."
Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. 10Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
