Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish1From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.
and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. 2He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. 3You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me.
I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! 4I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 5The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.
I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. 6To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit.
When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. 7"When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.
Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. 8"Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them.
But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" 9But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, 'Salvation comes from the LORD.'"
Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. 10And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
