When the Canaanite king of Arad who lived in the Negev heard that Israel was approaching along the road to Atharim, he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoner. 1When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming on the Atharim road, he fought against Israel and captured some prisoners.
So Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, "If you will indeed deliver this people into our hand, then we will utterly destroy their cities."2Then Israel made a vow to the LORD, "If you will hand this people over to us, we will completely destroy their cities."
The LORD listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of the place was called Hormah. 3The LORD listened to Israel's request and handed the Canaanites over to them, and Israel completely destroyed them and their cities. So they named the place Hormah.
Then they traveled from Mount Hor by the road to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom, but the people became impatient along the way.4Then they set out from Mount Hor by way of the Red Sea to bypass the land of Edom, but the people became impatient because of the journey.
And the people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness, for there is no bread or water, and we detest this worthless food." 5The people spoke against God and Moses: "Why have you led us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread or water, and we detest this wretched food!"
So the LORD sent poisonous snakes among the people, and they bit the people; many people of Israel died.6Then the LORD sent poisonous snakes among the people, and they bit them so that many Israelites died.
Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD that he would take away the snakes from us." So Moses prayed for the people. 7The people then came to Moses and said, "We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Intercede with the LORD so that he will take the snakes away from us." And Moses interceded for the people.
The LORD said to Moses, "Make a poisonous snake and set it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will live."8Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake image and mount it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will recover."
So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole, so that if a snake had bitten someone, when he looked at the bronze snake he lived. 9So Moses made a bronze snake and mounted it on a pole. Whenever someone was bitten, and he looked at the bronze snake, he recovered.
The Israelites traveled on and camped in Oboth.10The Israelites set out and camped at Oboth.
Then they traveled on from Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that is before Moab, on the eastern side.11They set out from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim in the wilderness that borders Moab on the east.
From there they moved on and camped in the valley of Zered.12From there they went and camped at Zered Valley.
From there they moved on and camped on the other side of the Arnon, in the wilderness that extends from the regions of the Amorites, for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.13They set out from there and camped on the other side of the Arnon River, in the wilderness that extends from the Amorite border, because the Arnon was the Moabite border between Moab and the Amorites.
This is why it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD, "Waheb in Suphah and the wadis, the Arnon14Therefore it is stated in the Book of the LORD's Wars: Waheb in Suphah and the ravines of the Arnon,
and the slope of the valleys that extends to the dwelling of Ar, and falls off at the border of Moab." 15even the slopes of the ravines that extend to the site of Ar and lie along the border of Moab.
And from there they traveled to Beer; that is the well where the LORD spoke to Moses, "Gather the people and I will give them water."16From there they went to Beer, the well the LORD told Moses about, "Gather the people so I may give them water."
Then Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well, sing to it! 17Then Israel sang this song: Spring up, well--sing to it!
The well which the princes dug, which the leaders of the people opened with their scepters and their staffs." And from the wilderness they traveled to Mattanah;18The princes dug the well; the nobles of the people hollowed it out with a scepter and with their staffs. They went from the wilderness to Mattanah,
and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;19from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the country of Moab, near the top of Pisgah, which overlooks the wilderness. 20from Bamoth to the valley in the territory of Moab near the Pisgah highlands that overlook the wasteland.
Then Israel sent messengers to King Sihon of the Amorites, saying, 21Israel sent messengers to say to King Sihon of the Amorites:
"Let us pass through your land; we will not turn aside into the fields or into the vineyards, nor will we drink water from any well, but we will go along the King's Highway until we pass your borders."22"Let us travel through your land. We won't go into the fields or vineyards. We won't drink any well water. We will travel the King's Highway until we have traveled through your territory."
But Sihon did not permit Israel to pass through his border; he gathered all his forces together and went out against Israel into the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.23But Sihon would not let Israel travel through his territory. Instead, he gathered his whole army and went out to confront Israel in the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.
But the Israelites defeated him in battle and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strongly defended.24Israel struck him with the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only up to the Ammonite border, because it was fortified.
So Israel took all these cities; and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages.25Israel took all the cities and lived in all these Amorite cities, including Heshbon and all its surrounding villages.
For Heshbon was the city of King Sihon of the Amorites. Now he had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all of his land from his control, as far as the Arnon.26Heshbon was the city of King Sihon of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken control of all his land as far as the Arnon.
That is why those who speak in proverbs say, "Come to Heshbon, let it be built. Let the city of Sihon be established! 27Therefore the poets say: Come to Heshbon, let it be rebuilt; let the city of Sihon be restored.
For fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It has consumed Ar of Moab and the lords of the high places of Arnon. 28For fire came out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the citizens of Arnon's heights.
Woe to you, Moab. You are ruined, O people of Chemosh! He has made his sons fugitives, and his daughters the prisoners of King Sihon of the Amorites. 29Woe to you, Moab! You have been destroyed, people of Chemosh! He gave up his sons as refugees, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon the Amorite king.
We have overpowered them; Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon. We have shattered them as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba." 30We threw them down; Heshbon has been destroyed as far as Dibon. We caused desolation as far as Nophah, which reaches as far as Medeba.
So the Israelites lived in the land of the Amorites.31So Israel lived in the Amorites' land.
Moses sent spies to reconnoiter Jaazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there. 32After Moses sent spies to Jazer, Israel captured its surrounding villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.
Then they turned and went up by the road to Bashan. And King Og of Bashan and all his forces marched out against them to do battle at Edrei.33Then they turned and went up the road to Bashan, and King Og of Bashan came out against them with his whole army to do battle at Edrei.
And the LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have delivered him and all his people and his land into your hand. You will do to him what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.34But the LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have handed him over to you along with his whole army and his land. Do to him as you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon."
So they defeated Og, his sons, and all his people, until there were no survivors, and they possessed his land. 35So they struck him, his sons, and his whole army until no one was left, and they took possession of his land.
