1Wine is a mocker and strong drink is a brawler; whoever goes astray by them is not wise. 1Wine is a mocker, beer is a brawler; whoever goes astray because of them is not wise.
2The king's terrifying anger is like the roar of a lion; whoever provokes him sins against himself. 2A king's terrible wrath is like the roaring of a lion; anyone who provokes him endangers himself.
3It is an honor for a person to cease from strife, but every fool quarrels. 3Honor belongs to the person who ends a dispute, but any fool can get himself into a quarrel.
4The sluggard will not plow during the planting season, so at harvest time he looks for the crop but has nothing. 4The slacker does not plow during planting season; at harvest time he looks, and there is nothing.
5Counsel in a person's heart is like deep water, but an understanding person draws it out. 5Counsel in a person's heart is deep water; but a person of understanding draws it out.
6Many people profess their loyalty, but a faithful person--who can find? 6Many a person proclaims his own loyalty, but who can find a trustworthy person?

14"It's worthless! It's worthless!" says the buyer, but when he goes on his way, he boasts. 14"It's worthless, it's worthless!" the buyer says, but after he is on his way, he gloats.
15There is gold, and an abundance of rubies, but words of knowledge are like a precious jewel. 15There is gold and a multitude of jewels, but knowledgeable lips are a rare treasure.
16Take a man's garment when he has given security for a stranger, and when he gives surety for strangers, hold him in pledge. 16Take his garment, for he has put up security for a stranger; get collateral if it is for foreigners.
17Bread gained by deceit tastes sweet to a person, but afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel. 17Food gained by fraud is sweet to a person, but afterward his mouth is full of gravel.
18Plans are established by counsel, so make war with guidance. 18Finalize plans with counsel, and wage war with sound guidance.
19The one who goes about gossiping reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with someone who is always opening his mouth. 19The one who reveals secrets is a constant gossip; avoid someone with a big mouth.
20The one who curses his father and his mother, his lamp will be extinguished in the blackest darkness. 20Whoever curses his father or mother-- his lamp will go out in deep darkness.
21An inheritance gained easily in the beginning will not be blessed in the end. 21An inheritance gained prematurely will not be blessed ultimately.
22Do not say, "I will pay back evil!" Wait for the LORD, so that he may vindicate you. 22Don't say, "I will avenge this evil!" Wait on the LORD, and he will rescue you.
23The LORD abhors differing weights, and dishonest scales are wicked. 23Differing weights are detestable to the LORD, and dishonest scales are unfair.
24The steps of a person are ordained by the LORD--so how can anyone understand his own way? 24Even a courageous person's steps are determined by the LORD, so how can anyone understand his own way?
25It is a snare for a person to rashly cry, "Holy!" and only afterward to consider what he has vowed. 25It is a trap for anyone to dedicate something rashly and later to reconsider his vows.
26A wise king separates out the wicked; he turns the threshing wheel over them. 26A wise king separates out the wicked and drives the threshing wheel over them.
27The human spirit is like the lamp of the LORD, searching all his innermost parts. 27The LORD's lamp sheds light on a person's life, searching the innermost parts.
28Loyal love and truth preserve a king, and his throne is upheld by loyal love. 28Loyalty and faithfulness guard a king; through loyalty he maintains his throne.
29The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is gray hair. 29The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is gray hair.
30Beatings and wounds cleanse away evil, and floggings cleanse the innermost being. 30Lashes and wounds purge away evil, and beatings cleanse the innermost parts.
