For the music director; a well-written song by the Korahites. As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God! 1As a deer longs for flowing streams, so I long for you, God.
I thirst for God, for the living God. I say, "When will I be able to go and appear in God's presence?" 2I thirst for God, the living God. When can I come and appear before God?
I cannot eat, I weep day and night; all day long they say to me, "Where is your God?" 3My tears have been my food day and night, while all day long people say to me, "Where is your God?"
I will remember and weep! For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God, shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival. 4I remember this as I pour out my heart: how I walked with many, leading the festive procession to the house of God, with joyful and thankful shouts.
Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. 5Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God.
I am depressed, so I will pray to you while I am trapped here in the region of the upper Jordan, from Hermon, from Mount Mizar. 6I am deeply depressed; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
One deep stream calls out to another at the sound of your waterfalls; all your billows and waves overwhelm me. 7Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your billows have swept over me.
By day the LORD decrees his loyal love, and by night he gives me a song, a prayer to the living God. 8The LORD will send his faithful love by day; his song will be with me in the night--a prayer to the God of my life.
I will pray to God, my high ridge: "Why do you ignore me? Why must I walk around mourning because my enemies oppress me?" 9I will say to God, my rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about in sorrow because of the enemy's oppression?"
My enemies' taunts cut into me to the bone, as they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" 10My adversaries taunt me, as if crushing my bones, while all day long they say to me, "Where is your God?"
Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. 11Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God.
