From Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Sosthenes, our brother,1Παῦλος κλητὸς ἀπόστολος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ διὰ θελήματος Θεοῦ καὶ Σωσθένης ἀδελφὸς
to the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, and called to be saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.2Τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ «τῇ οὔσῃ ἐν Κορίνθῳ» «ἡγιασμένοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ» κλητοῖς ἁγίοις σὺν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐπικαλουμένοις τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ αὐτῶν καὶ ἡμῶν
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! 3Χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ Θεοῦ Πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus.4Εὐχαριστῶ τῷ Θεῷ ‹μου› πάντοτε περὶ ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῇ χάριτι τοῦ Θεοῦ τῇ δοθείσῃ ὑμῖν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
For you were made rich in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge--5ὅτι ἐν παντὶ ἐπλουτίσθητε ἐν αὐτῷ ἐν παντὶ λόγῳ καὶ πάσῃ γνώσει
just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you--6καθὼς τὸ μαρτύριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐβεβαιώθη ἐν ὑμῖν
so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.7ὥστε ὑμᾶς μὴ ὑστερεῖσθαι ἐν μηδενὶ χαρίσματι ἀπεκδεχομένους τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.8ὃς καὶ βεβαιώσει ὑμᾶς ἕως τέλους ἀνεγκλήτους ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 9πιστὸς Θεὸς δι’ οὗ ἐκλήθητε εἰς κοινωνίαν τοῦ Υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν
I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree together, to end your divisions, and to be united by the same mind and purpose.10Παρακαλῶ δὲ ὑμᾶς ἀδελφοί διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἵνα τὸ αὐτὸ λέγητε πάντες καὶ μὴ ἐν ὑμῖν σχίσματα ἦτε δὲ κατηρτισμένοι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ νοῒ καὶ ἐν τῇ αὐτῇ γνώμῃ
For members of Chloe's household have made it clear to me, my brothers and sisters, that there are quarrels among you.11ἐδηλώθη γάρ μοι περὶ ὑμῶν ἀδελφοί μου ὑπὸ τῶν Χλόης ὅτι ἔριδες ἐν ὑμῖν εἰσιν
Now I mean this, that each of you is saying, "I am with Paul," or "I am with Apollos," or "I am with Cephas," or "I am with Christ."12λέγω δὲ τοῦτο ὅτι ἕκαστος ὑμῶν λέγει Ἐγὼ μέν εἰμι Παύλου Ἐγὼ δὲ Ἀπολλῶ Ἐγὼ δὲ Κηφᾶ Ἐγὼ δὲ Χριστοῦ
Is Christ divided? Paul wasn't crucified for you, was he? Or were you in fact baptized in the name of Paul?13Μεμέρισται Χριστός μὴ Παῦλος ἐσταυρώθη ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα Παύλου ἐβαπτίσθητε
I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,14εὐχαριστῶ [τῷ θεῷ] ὅτι οὐδένα ὑμῶν ἐβάπτισα εἰ μὴ Κρίσπον καὶ Γάϊον
so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name!15ἵνα μή τις εἴπῃ ὅτι εἰς τὸ ἐμὸν ὄνομα ἐβαπτίσθητε
(I also baptized the household of Stephanus. Otherwise, I do not remember whether I baptized anyone else.)16ἐβάπτισα δὲ καὶ τὸν Στεφανᾶ οἶκον λοιπὸν οὐκ οἶδα εἴ τινα ἄλλον ἐβάπτισα
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--and not with clever speech, so that the cross of Christ would not become useless.
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.18 λόγος γὰρ τοῦ σταυροῦ τοῖς μὲν ἀπολλυμένοις μωρία ἐστίν τοῖς δὲ σῳζομένοις ἡμῖν δύναμις Θεοῦ ἐστιν
For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent."19γέγραπται γάρ Ἀπολῶ τὴν σοφίαν τῶν σοφῶν καὶ τὴν σύνεσιν τῶν συνετῶν ἀθετήσω
Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law? Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish?20Ποῦ σοφός ποῦ γραμματεύς ποῦ συζητητὴς τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου οὐχὶ ἐμώρανεν Θεὸς τὴν σοφίαν τοῦ κόσμου
For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching.21ἐπειδὴ γὰρ ἐν τῇ σοφίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἔγνω κόσμος διὰ τῆς σοφίας τὸν Θεόν εὐδόκησεν Θεὸς διὰ τῆς μωρίας τοῦ κηρύγματος σῶσαι τοὺς πιστεύοντας
For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom,22Ἐπειδὴ καὶ Ἰουδαῖοι σημεῖα αἰτοῦσιν καὶ Ἕλληνες σοφίαν ζητοῦσιν
but we preach about a crucified Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.23ἡμεῖς δὲ κηρύσσομεν Χριστὸν ἐσταυρωμένον Ἰουδαίοις μὲν σκάνδαλον ἔθνεσιν δὲ μωρίαν
But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.24αὐτοῖς δὲ τοῖς κλητοῖς Ἰουδαίοις τε καὶ Ἕλλησιν Χριστὸν Θεοῦ δύναμιν καὶ Θεοῦ σοφίαν
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
Think about the circumstances of your call, brothers and sisters. Not many were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position.26Βλέπετε γὰρ τὴν κλῆσιν ὑμῶν ἀδελφοί ὅτι οὐ πολλοὶ σοφοὶ κατὰ σάρκα οὐ πολλοὶ δυνατοί οὐ πολλοὶ εὐγενεῖς
But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong.27ἀλλὰ τὰ μωρὰ τοῦ κόσμου ἐξελέξατο Θεός ἵνα καταισχύνῃ τοὺς σοφούς καὶ τὰ ἀσθενῆ τοῦ κόσμου ἐξελέξατο Θεός ἵνα καταισχύνῃ τὰ ἰσχυρά
God chose what is low and despised in the world, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something,28καὶ τὰ ἀγενῆ τοῦ κόσμου καὶ τὰ ἐξουθενημένα ἐξελέξατο Θεός (καὶ) τὰ μὴ ὄντα ἵνα τὰ ὄντα καταργήσῃ
so that no one can boast in his presence.29ὅπως μὴ καυχήσηται πᾶσα σὰρξ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ
He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption,30Ἐξ αὐτοῦ δὲ ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ὃς ἐγενήθη σοφία ἡμῖν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ δικαιοσύνη τε καὶ ἁγιασμὸς καὶ ἀπολύτρωσις
so that, as it is written, "Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord." 31ἵνα καθὼς γέγραπται καυχώμενος ἐν Κυρίῳ καυχάσθω
