A psalm by Asaph. El, God, the LORD speaks, and summons the earth to come from the east and west. 1A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
From Zion, the most beautiful of all places, God comes in splendor. 2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.
Our God approaches and is not silent; consuming fire goes ahead of him and all around him a storm rages. 3Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.
He summons the heavens above, as well as the earth, so that he might judge his people. 4He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.
He says: "Assemble my covenant people before me, those who ratified a covenant with me by sacrifice!" 5Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
The heavens declare his fairness, for God is judge. (Selah) 6And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.
He says: "Listen my people! I am speaking! Listen Israel! I am accusing you! I am God, your God! 7Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.
I am not condemning you because of your sacrifices, or because of your burnt sacrifices that you continually offer me. 8I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.
I do not need to take a bull from your household or goats from your sheepfolds. 9I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.
For every wild animal in the forest belongs to me, as well as the cattle that graze on a thousand hills. 10For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.
I keep track of every bird in the hills, and the insects of the field are mine. 11I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
Even if I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all it contains belong to me. 12If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
Do I eat the flesh of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats? 13Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
Present to God a thank-offering! Repay your vows to the sovereign One! 14Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:
Pray to me when you are in trouble! I will deliver you, and you will honor me!" 15And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
God says this to the evildoer: "How can you declare my commands, and talk about my covenant? 16But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?
For you hate instruction and reject my words. 17Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
When you see a thief, you join him; you associate with men who are unfaithful to their wives. 18When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.
You do damage with words, and use your tongue to deceive. 19Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.
You plot against your brother; you slander your own brother. 20Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.
When you did these things, I was silent, so you thought I was exactly like you. But now I will condemn you and state my case against you! 21These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
Carefully consider this, you who reject God! Otherwise I will rip you to shreds and no one will be able to rescue you. 22Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.
Whoever presents a thank-offering honors me. To whoever obeys my commands, I will reveal my power to deliver." 23Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.
