So get rid of all evil and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.1Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander,
And yearn like newborn infants for pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up to salvation,2like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
if you have experienced the Lord's kindness. 3if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.
So as you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but chosen and priceless in God's sight,4And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God,
you yourselves, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood and to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.5you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
For it says in scripture, "Look, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and priceless cornerstone, and whoever believes in him will never be put to shame."6For this is contained in Scripture: "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."
So you who believe see his value, but for those who do not believe, the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, 7This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, "THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone,"
and a stumbling-stone and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.8and, "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.9But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
You once were not a people, but now you are God's people. You were shown no mercy, but now you have received mercy. 10for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.
Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and exiles to keep away from fleshly desires that do battle against the soul,11Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.
and maintain good conduct among the non-Christians, so that though they now malign you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God when he appears. 12Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Be subject to every human institution for the Lord's sake, whether to a king as supreme13Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,
or to governors as those he commissions to punish wrongdoers and praise those who do good.14or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.
For God wants you to silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good.15For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.
Live as free people, not using your freedom as a pretext for evil, but as God's slaves.16Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God.
Honor all people, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the king. 17Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are perverse.18Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable.
For this finds God's favor, if because of conscience toward God someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly.19For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly.
For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it? But if you do good and suffer and so endure, this finds favor with God.20For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.
For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps.21For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,
He committed no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth.22WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;
When he was maligned, he did not answer back; when he suffered, he threatened no retaliation, but committed himself to God who judges justly.23and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning and live for righteousness. By his wounds you were healed.24and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
For you were going astray like sheep but now you have turned back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. 25For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
