NET BibleNew International Version
The one who stiffens his neck after numerous rebukes will suddenly be destroyed without remedy. 1Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
When the righteous become numerous, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan. 2When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.
The man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but whoever associates with prostitutes wastes his wealth. 3A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
A king brings stability to a land by justice, but one who exacts tribute tears it down. 4By justice a king gives a country stability, but those who are greedy for bribes tear it down.
The one who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his steps. 5Those who flatter their neighbors are spreading nets for their feet.
In the transgression of an evil person there is a snare, but a righteous person can sing and rejoice. 6Evildoers are snared by their own sin, but the righteous shout for joy and are glad.
The righteous person cares for the legal rights of the poor; the wicked does not understand such knowledge. 7The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.
Scornful people inflame a city, but those who are wise turn away wrath. 8Mockers stir up a city, but the wise turn away anger.
If a wise person goes to court with a foolish person, there is no peace whether he is angry or laughs. 9If a wise person goes to court with a fool, the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.
Bloodthirsty people hate someone with integrity; as for the upright, they seek his life. 10The bloodthirsty hate a person of integrity and seek to kill the upright.
A fool lets fly with all his temper, but a wise person keeps it back. 11Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.
If a ruler listens to lies, all his ministers will be wicked. 12If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials become wicked.
The poor person and the oppressor have this in common: the LORD gives light to the eyes of them both. 13The poor and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.
If a king judges the poor in truth, his throne will be established forever. 14If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will be established forever.
A rod and reproof impart wisdom, but a child who is unrestrained brings shame to his mother. 15A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother.
When the wicked increase, transgression increases, but the righteous will see their downfall. 16When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall.
Discipline your child, and he will give you rest; he will bring you happiness. 17Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.
When there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but the one who keeps the law, blessed is he! 18Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom's instruction.
A servant cannot be corrected by words, for although he understands, there is no answer. 19Servants cannot be corrected by mere words; though they understand, they will not respond.
Do you see someone who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him. 20Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them.
If someone pampers his servant from youth, he will be a weakling in the end. 21A servant pampered from youth will turn out to be insolent.
An angry person stirs up dissension, and a wrathful person is abounding in transgression. 22An angry person stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins.
A person's pride will bring him low, but one who has a lowly spirit will gain honor. 23Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor.
Whoever shares with a thief is his own enemy; he hears the oath to testify, but does not talk. 24The accomplices of thieves are their own enemies; they are put under oath and dare not testify.
The fear of people becomes a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD will be set on high. 25Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
Many people seek the face of a ruler, but it is from the LORD that one receives justice. 26Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the LORD that one gets justice.
An unjust person is an abomination to the righteous, and the one who lives an upright life is an abomination to the wicked. 27The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright.
