Then Moses called all the people of Israel together and said to them: "Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances that I am about to deliver to you today; learn them and be careful to keep them!1Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, “Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them!
The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.2“The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Mount Sinai.
He did not make this covenant with our ancestors but with us, we who are here today, all of us living now.3The LORD did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive today.
The LORD spoke face to face with you at the mountain, from the middle of the fire.4At the mountain the LORD spoke to you face to face from the heart of the fire.
(I was standing between the LORD and you at that time to reveal to you the message of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain.) He said: 5I stood as an intermediary between you and the LORD, for you were afraid of the fire and did not want to approach the mountain. He spoke to me, and I passed his words on to you. This is what he said:
"I am the LORD your God, he who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the place of slavery.6“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
You must not have any other gods besides me.7“You must not have any other god but me.
You must not make for yourself an image of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters beneath.8“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
You must not worship or serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. I punish the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject me,9You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
but I show covenant faithfulness to the thousands who choose me and keep my commandments.10But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
You must not make use of the name of the LORD your God for worthless purposes, for the LORD will not exonerate anyone who abuses his name that way.11“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
Be careful to observe the Sabbath day just as the LORD your God has commanded you.12“Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.
You are to work and do all your tasks in six days,13You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male slave, your female slave, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest.14but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys and other livestock, and any foreigners living among you. All your male and female servants must rest as you do.
Recall that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there by strength and power. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.15Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the LORD your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day.
Honor your father and your mother just as the LORD your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that he is about to give you.16“Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
You must not murder.17“You must not murder.
You must not commit adultery.18“You must not commit adultery.
You must not steal.19“You must not steal.
You must not offer false testimony against another.20“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
You must not desire another man's wife, nor should you crave his house, his field, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, or anything else he owns." 21“You must not covet your neighbor’s wife. You must not covet your neighbor’s house or land, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.
The LORD said these things to your entire assembly at the mountain from the middle of the fire, the cloud, and the darkness with a loud voice, and that was all he said. Then he inscribed the words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.22“The LORD spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
Then, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness while the mountain was ablaze, all your tribal leaders and elders approached me.23“But when you heard the voice from the heart of the darkness, while the mountain was blazing with fire, all your tribal leaders and elders came to me.
You said, "The LORD our God has shown us his great glory and we have heard him speak from the middle of the fire. It is now clear to us that God can speak to human beings and they can keep on living.24They said, ‘Look, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak to us humans, and yet we live!
But now, why should we die, because this intense fire will consume us! If we keep hearing the voice of the LORD our God we will die!25But now, why should we risk death again? If the LORD our God speaks to us again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome fire.
Who is there from the entire human race who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of the fire as we have, and has lived?26Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and yet survive?
You go near so that you can hear everything the LORD our God is saying and then you can tell us whatever he says to you; then we will pay attention and do it."27Go yourself and listen to what the LORD our God says. Then come and tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey.’
When the LORD heard you speaking to me, he said to me, "I have heard what these people have said to you--they have spoken well.28“The LORD heard the request you made to me. And he said, ‘I have heard what the people said to you, and they are right.
If only it would really be their desire to fear me and obey all my commandments in the future, so that it may go well with them and their descendants forever.29Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever.
Go and tell them, 'Return to your tents!'30Go and tell them, “Return to your tents.”
But as for you, remain here with me so I can declare to you all the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that you are to teach them, so that they can carry them out in the land I am about to give them."31But you stand here with me so I can give you all my commands, decrees, and regulations. You must teach them to the people so they can obey them in the land I am giving them as their possession.’”
Be careful, therefore, to do exactly what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn right or left!32So Moses told the people, “You must be careful to obey all the commands of the LORD your God, following his instructions in every detail.
Walk just as he has commanded you so that you may live, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land you are going to possess. 33Stay on the path that the LORD your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy.
