After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.1After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.
But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near,2However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
Jesus' brothers said to him, "Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.3So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.
No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world."4For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”
For even his own brothers did not believe in him.5For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.
Therefore Jesus told them, "My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.6Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.7The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.
You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come."8Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”
After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.9Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.
However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.10But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.
Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, "Where is he?"11So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”
Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, "He is a good man." Others replied, "No, he deceives the people."12Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”
But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.13Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.
Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.14About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.
The Jews there were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning without having been taught?"15The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man attain such learning without having studied?”
Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.16“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.
Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.17If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.18He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.
Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”
"You are demon-possessed," the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill you?"20“You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”
Jesus said to them, "I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.21Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath.22But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)
Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man's whole body on the Sabbath?23If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?
Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly."24Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”
At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?25Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah?26Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?
But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from."27But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”
Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him,28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,
but I know him because I am from him and he sent me."29but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.30So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?"31Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”
The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.32When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.
Jesus said, "I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me.33So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come."34You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
The Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?35At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
What did he mean when he said, 'You will look for me, but you will not find me,' and 'Where I am, you cannot come'?"36What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.37On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them."38Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’ ”
By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.39He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
On hearing his words, some of the people said, "Surely this man is the Prophet."40On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
Others said, "He is the Messiah." Still others asked, "How can the Messiah come from Galilee?41Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?
Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David's descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?"42Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.43So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.
Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.
Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?"45Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
"No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards replied.46“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.
"You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted.47“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.
"Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law--there is a curse on them."49But this crowd that does not know the law, they are under a curse.”
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked,50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,
"Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?"51“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”
They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee."52“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”
Then they all went home,53Then each went to his own home.
