Deuteronomy 23
NIV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionEnglish Standard Version
No one who has been emasculated by crushing or cutting may enter the assembly of the LORD.1“No one whose testicles are crushed or whose male organ is cut off shall enter the assembly of the LORD.
No one born of a forbidden marriage nor any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, not even in the tenth generation.2“No one born of a forbidden union may enter the assembly of the LORD. Even to the tenth generation, none of his descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD.
No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, not even in the tenth generation.3“No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the LORD. Even to the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the LORD forever,
For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you.4because they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way, when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you.
However, the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you.5But the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam; instead the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loved you.
Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as you live.6You shall not seek their peace or their prosperity all your days forever.
Do not despise an Edomite, for the Edomites are related to you. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you resided as foreigners in their country.7“You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were a sojourner in his land.
The third generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD.8Children born to them in the third generation may enter the assembly of the LORD.
When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure.9“When you are encamped against your enemies, then you shall keep yourself from every evil thing.
If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there.10“If any man among you becomes unclean because of a nocturnal emission, then he shall go outside the camp. He shall not come inside the camp,
But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.11but when evening comes, he shall bathe himself in water, and as the sun sets, he may come inside the camp.
Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself.12“You shall have a place outside the camp, and you shall go out to it.
As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement.13And you shall have a trowel with your tools, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig a hole with it and turn back and cover up your excrement.
For the LORD your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.14Because the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and to give up your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy, so that he may not see anything indecent among you and turn away from you.
If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand them over to their master.15“You shall not give up to his master a slave who has escaped from his master to you.
Let them live among you wherever they like and in whatever town they choose. Do not oppress them.16He shall dwell with you, in your midst, in the place that he shall choose within one of your towns, wherever it suits him. You shall not wrong him.
No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute.17“None of the daughters of Israel shall be a cult prostitute, and none of the sons of Israel shall be a cult prostitute.
You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute into the house of the LORD your God to pay any vow, because the LORD your God detests them both.18You shall not bring the fee of a prostitute or the wages of a dog into the house of the LORD your God in payment for any vow, for both of these are an abomination to the LORD your God.
Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest.19“You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest.
You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.20You may charge a foreigner interest, but you may not charge your brother interest, that the LORD your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.
If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the LORD your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin.21“If you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay fulfilling it, for the LORD your God will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin.
But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty.22But if you refrain from vowing, you will not be guilty of sin.
Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the LORD your God with your own mouth.23You shall be careful to do what has passed your lips, for you have voluntarily vowed to the LORD your God what you have promised with your mouth.
If you enter your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any in your basket.24“If you go into your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, as many as you wish, but you shall not put any in your bag.
If you enter your neighbor's grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to their standing grain.25If you go into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not put a sickle to your neighbor’s standing grain.
