New International VersionEnglish Standard Version
Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt.1Some time after this, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker committed an offense against their lord the king of Egypt.
Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,2And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,
and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined.3and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined.
The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them. After they had been in custody for some time,4The captain of the guard appointed Joseph to be with them, and he attended them. They continued for some time in custody.
each of the two men--the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison--had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.5And one night they both dreamed—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—each his own dream, and each dream with its own interpretation.
When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected.6When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled.
So he asked Pharaoh's officials who were in custody with him in his master's house, "Why do you look so sad today?"7So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, “Why are your faces downcast today?”
"We both had dreams," they answered, "but there is no one to interpret them." Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams."8They said to him, “We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” And Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.”
So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, "In my dream I saw a vine in front of me,9So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and said to him, “In my dream there was a vine before me,
and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes.10and on the vine there were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the clusters ripened into grapes.
Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup and put the cup in his hand."11Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”
"This is what it means," Joseph said to him. "The three branches are three days.12Then Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days.
Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.13In three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office, and you shall place Pharaoh’s cup in his hand as formerly, when you were his cupbearer.
But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison.14Only remember me, when it is well with you, and please do me the kindness to mention me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this house.
I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon."15For I was indeed stolen out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the pit.”
When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, "I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, “I also had a dream: there were three cake baskets on my head,
In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head."17and in the uppermost basket there were all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it out of the basket on my head.”
"This is what it means," Joseph said. "The three baskets are three days.18And Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days.
Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh."19In three days Pharaoh will lift up your head—from you!—and hang you on a tree. And the birds will eat the flesh from you.”
Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials:20On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he made a feast for all his servants and lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.
He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh's hand--21He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.
but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.22But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.
The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.23Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.
