Thessalonians 5
NIV Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New International VersionInternational Standard Version
Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,1Now you do not need to have anything written to you about times and dates, brothers,
for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.2for you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.3When people say, "There is peace and security," destruction will strike them as suddenly as labor pains come to a pregnant woman, and they will not be able to escape.
But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.4However, brothers, you are not in the darkness, in order that the Day of the Lord might surprise you like a thief.
You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.5For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to darkness.
So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.6Therefore, let's not fall asleep like others do, but let's stay awake and be sober.
For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.7For people who go to sleep, go to sleep at night; and people who get drunk, get drunk at night.
But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.8But since we belong to the day, let's be sober. We must put on the breastplate of faith and love, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.9For God has not destined us to receive wrath but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus, the Messiah,
He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.10who died for us in order that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.11So then, encourage one another and build each other up, as you are doing.
Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you.12Brothers, we ask you to show your appreciation for those who work among you, set an example for you in the Lord, and instruct you.
Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.13Hold them in the highest regard, loving them because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.14We urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are idle, cheer up those who are discouraged, and help those who are weak. Be patient with everyone.
Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.15Make sure that no one pays back evil for evil. Instead, always pursue what is good for each other and for everyone else.
Rejoice always,16Always be joyful.
pray continually,17Continually be prayerful.
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.18In everything be thankful, because this is God's will for you in the Messiah Jesus.
Do not quench the Spirit.19Do not put out the Spirit's fire.
Do not treat prophecies with contempt20Do not despise prophecies.
but test them all; hold on to what is good,21Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good.
reject every kind of evil.22Keep away from every kind of evil.
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.23May the God of peace himself make you holy in every way. And may your whole being—spirit, soul, and body—remain blameless when our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, appears.
The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will continue to be faithful.
Brothers and sisters, pray for us.25Brothers, pray for us.
Greet all God's people with a holy kiss.26Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.27I order you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.28May the grace of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, be with you! Amen.
