New International VersionKing James Bible
Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you.1Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.2Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.3Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.4Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.5Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.6Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.
Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.7Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.8Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.
Don't grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!9Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.10Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.
As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.11Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.
Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear--not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple "Yes" or "No." Otherwise you will be condemned.12But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.13Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.14Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.15And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.17Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.18And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back,19Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.20Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
