The LORD said to Moses,1Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
"Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff.2"Speak to the sons of Israel, and get from them a rod for each father's household: twelve rods, from all their leaders according to their fathers' households. You shall write each name on his rod,
On the staff of Levi write Aaron's name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe.3and write Aaron's name on the rod of Levi; for there is one rod for the head of each of their fathers' households.
Place them in the tent of meeting in front of the ark of the covenant law, where I meet with you.4"You shall then deposit them in the tent of meeting in front of the testimony, where I meet with you.
The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites."5"It will come about that the rod of the man whom I choose will sprout. Thus I will lessen from upon Myself the grumblings of the sons of Israel, who are grumbling against you."
So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron's staff was among them.6Moses therefore spoke to the sons of Israel, and all their leaders gave him a rod apiece, for each leader according to their fathers' households, twelve rods, with the rod of Aaron among their rods.
Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the tent of the covenant law.7So Moses deposited the rods before the LORD in the tent of the testimony.
The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron's staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.8Now on the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds.
Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD's presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.9Moses then brought out all the rods from the presence of the LORD to all the sons of Israel; and they looked, and each man took his rod.
The LORD said to Moses, "Put back Aaron's staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die."10But the LORD said to Moses, "Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony to be kept as a sign against the rebels, that you may put an end to their grumblings against Me, so that they will not die."
Moses did just as the LORD commanded him.11Thus Moses did; just as the LORD had commanded him, so he did.
The Israelites said to Moses, "We will die! We are lost, we are all lost!12Then the sons of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, "Behold, we perish, we are dying, we are all dying!
Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the LORD will die. Are we all going to die?"13"Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the LORD, must die. Are we to perish completely?"
