Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek.1He also came to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple named Timothy was there, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but whose father was a Greek.
The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him.2The brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him.
Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.3Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was Greek.
As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey.4As they went through the towns, they passed on the decrees that had been decided on by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the Gentile believers to obey.
So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.5So the churches were being strengthened in the faith and were increasing in number every day.
Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.6They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in the province of Asia.
When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.7When they came to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to do this,
So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.8so they passed through Mysia and went down to Troas.
During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."9A vision appeared to Paul during the night: A Macedonian man was standing there urging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us!"
After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.10After Paul saw the vision, we attempted immediately to go over to Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.
From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis.11We put out to sea from Troas and sailed a straight course to Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis,
From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.12and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of that district of Macedonia, a Roman colony. We stayed in this city for some days.
On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.13On the Sabbath day we went outside the city gate to the side of the river, where we thought there would be a place of prayer, and we sat down and began to speak to the women who had assembled there.
One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message.14A woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, a God-fearing woman, listened to us. The Lord opened her heart to respond to what Paul was saying.
When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.15After she and her household were baptized, she urged us, "If you consider me to be a believer in the Lord, come and stay in my house." And she persuaded us.
Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.16Now as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave girl met us who had a spirit that enabled her to foretell the future by supernatural means. She brought her owners a great profit by fortune-telling.
She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved."17She followed behind Paul and us and kept crying out, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation."
She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her.18She continued to do this for many days. But Paul became greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out of her at once.
When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.19But when her owners saw their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities.
They brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar20When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, "These men are throwing our city into confusion. They are Jews
by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice."21and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us to accept or practice, since we are Romans."
The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods.22The crowd joined the attack against them, and the magistrates tore the clothes off Paul and Silas and ordered them to be beaten with rods.
After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.23After they had beaten them severely, they threw them into prison and commanded the jailer to guard them securely.
When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.24Receiving such orders, he threw them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the rest of the prisoners were listening to them.
Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose.26Suddenly a great earthquake occurred, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. Immediately all the doors flew open, and the bonds of all the prisoners came loose.
The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.27When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison standing open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, because he assumed the prisoners had escaped.
But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"28But Paul called out loudly, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!"
The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.29Calling for lights, the jailer rushed in and fell down trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas.
He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"30Then he brought them outside and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."31They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household."
Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him, along with all those who were in his house.
At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.33At that hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and all his family were baptized right away.
The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God--he and his whole household.34The jailer brought them into his house and set food before them, and he rejoiced greatly that he had come to believe in God, together with his entire household.
When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: "Release those men."35At daybreak the magistrates sent their police officers, saying, "Release those men."
The jailer told Paul, "The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace."36The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, "The magistrates have sent orders to release you. So come out now and go in peace."
But Paul said to the officers: "They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out."37But Paul said to the police officers, "They had us beaten in public without a proper trial--even though we are Roman citizens--and they threw us in prison. And now they want to send us away secretly? Absolutely not! They themselves must come and escort us out!"
The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.38The police officers reported these words to the magistrates. They were frightened when they heard Paul and Silas were Roman citizens
They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.39and came and apologized to them. After they brought them out, they asked them repeatedly to leave the city.
After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they left.40When they came out of the prison, they entered Lydia's house, and when they saw the brothers, they encouraged them and then departed.
