New International VersionNET Bible
Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors.1You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors.
Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.2Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.3So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD's mouth.
Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.4Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these forty years.
Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.5Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, the LORD your God disciplines you.
Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.6So you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land--a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;7For the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of brooks, springs, and fountains flowing forth in valleys and hills,
a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;8a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey,
a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.9a land where you may eat food in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper.
When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.10You will eat your fill and then praise the LORD your God because of the good land he has given you.
Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.11Be sure you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today.
Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,12When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses,
and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,13when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything,
then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.14be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery,
He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.15and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and
He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.16fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you.
You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."17Be careful not to say, "My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth."
But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.18You must remember the LORD your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day.
If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.19Now if you forget the LORD your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated.
Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.20Just like the nations the LORD is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him.
