Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.1Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he had raised from the dead.
Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.2So they prepared a dinner for Jesus there. Martha was serving, and Lazarus was among those present at the table with him.
Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.3Then Mary took three quarters of a pound of expensive aromatic oil from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus. She then wiped his feet dry with her hair. (Now the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfumed oil.)
But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was going to betray him) said,
"Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages."5"Why wasn't this oil sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?"
He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.6(Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)
"Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.7So Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She has kept it for the day of my burial.
You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."8For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me!"
Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.9Now a large crowd of Judeans learned that Jesus was there, and so they came not only because of him but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.
So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,10So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too,
for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.11for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus.
The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the king of Israel!"13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They began to shout, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!"
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:14Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
"Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."15"Do not be afraid, people of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey' s colt!"
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.16(His disciples did not understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that these things had happened to him.)
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.17So the crowd who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were continuing to testify about it.
Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.18Because they had heard that Jesus had performed this miraculous sign, the crowd went out to meet him.
So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"19Thus the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing. Look, the world has run off after him!"
Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.20Now some Greeks were among those who had gone up to worship at the feast.
They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus."21So these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus."
Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.22Philip went and told Andrew, and they both went and told Jesus.
Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.23Jesus replied, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.24I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain.
Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.25The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards it for eternal life.
Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.26If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
"Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.27"Now my soul is greatly distressed. And what should I say? 'Father, deliver me from this hour'? No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour.
Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."28Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."
The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.29The crowd that stood there and heard the voice said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to him.
Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine.30Jesus said, "This voice has not come for my benefit but for yours.
Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."
He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.33(Now he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die.)
The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?"34Then the crowd responded, "We have heard from the law that the Christ will remain forever. How can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"
Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.35Jesus replied, "The light is with you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.36While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." When Jesus had said these things, he went away and hid himself from them.
Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.37Although Jesus had performed so many miraculous signs before them, they still refused to believe in him,
This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"38so that the word of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said, "Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:39For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said,
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them."40"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them."
Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.41Isaiah said these things because he saw Christ's glory, and spoke about him.
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;42Nevertheless, even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not confess Jesus to be the Christ, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.
for they loved human praise more than praise from God.43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
Then Jesus cried out, "Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.44But Jesus shouted out, "The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me,
The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.45and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me.
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.46I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness.
"If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.47If anyone hears my words and does not obey them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.48The one who rejects me and does not accept my words has a judge; the word I have spoken will judge him at the last day.
For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.49For I have not spoken from my own authority, but the Father himself who sent me has commanded me what I should say and what I should speak.
I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Thus the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me."
