Again, in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,1The word of the LORD came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month:
“Son of man, write down the name of the day, this very day—the king of Babylon started his siege against Jerusalem this very day.2"Son of man, write down the name of this day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.
And utter a parable to the rebellious house, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Put on a pot, set it on, And also pour water into it.3Recite a proverb to this rebellious house and say to them, 'This is what the sovereign LORD says: "'Set on the pot, set it on, pour water in it too;
Gather pieces of meat in it, Every good piece, The thigh and the shoulder. Fill it with choice cuts;4add the pieces of meat to it, every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; fill it with choice bones.
Take the choice of the flock. Also pile fuel bones under it, Make it boil well, And let the cuts simmer in it.”5Take the choice bone of the flock, heap up bones under it; boil rapidly, and boil its bones in it.
‘Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “Woe to the bloody city, To the pot whose scum is in it, And whose scum is not gone from it! Bring it out piece by piece, On which no lot has fallen.6"'Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: Woe to the city of bloodshed, the pot whose rot is in it, whose rot has not been removed from it! Empty it piece by piece. No lot has fallen on it.
For her blood is in her midst; She set it on top of a rock; She did not pour it on the ground, To cover it with dust.7For her blood was in it; she poured it on an exposed rock; she did not pour it on the ground to cover it up with dust.
That it may raise up fury and take vengeance, I have set her blood on top of a rock, That it may not be covered.”8To arouse anger, to take vengeance, I have placed her blood on an exposed rock so that it cannot be covered up.
‘Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “Woe to the bloody city! I too will make the pyre great.9"'Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: Woe to the city of bloodshed! I will also make the pile high.
Heap on the wood, Kindle the fire; Cook the meat well, Mix in the spices, And let the cuts be burned up.10Pile up the bones, kindle the fire; cook the meat well, mix in the spices, let the bones be charred.
“Then set the pot empty on the coals, That it may become hot and its bronze may burn, That its filthiness may be melted in it, That its scum may be consumed.11Set the empty pot on the coals, until it becomes hot and its copper glows, until its uncleanness melts within it and its rot is consumed.
She has grown weary with lies, And her great scum has not gone from her. Let her scum be in the fire!12It has tried my patience; yet its thick rot is not removed from it. Subject its rot to the fire!
In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I have cleansed you, and you were not cleansed, You will not be cleansed of your filthiness anymore, Till I have caused My fury to rest upon you.13You mix uncleanness with obscene conduct. I tried to cleanse you, but you are not clean. You will not be cleansed from your uncleanness until I have exhausted my anger on you.
I, the LORD, have spoken it; It shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not hold back, Nor will I spare, Nor will I relent; According to your ways And according to your deeds They will judge you,” Says the Lord GOD.’ ”14"'I the LORD have spoken; judgment is coming and I will act! I will not relent, or show pity, or be sorry! I will judge you according to your conduct and your deeds, declares the sovereign LORD.'"
Also the word of the LORD came to me, saying,15The word of LORD came to me:
“Son of man, behold, I take away from you the desire of your eyes with one stroke; yet you shall neither mourn nor weep, nor shall your tears run down.16"Son of man, realize that I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you with a jolt, but you must not mourn or weep or shed tears.
Sigh in silence, make no mourning for the dead; bind your turban on your head, and put your sandals on your feet; do not cover your lips, and do not eat man’s bread of sorrow.17Groan in silence for the dead, but do not perform mourning rites. Bind on your turban and put your sandals on your feet. Do not cover your lip and do not eat food brought by others."
So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died; and the next morning I did as I was commanded.18So I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening. In the morning I acted just as I was commanded.
And the people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things signify to us, that you behave so?”19Then the people said to me, "Will you not tell us what these things you are doing mean for us?"
Then I answered them, “The word of the LORD came to me, saying,20So I said to them: "The word of the LORD came to me:
‘Speak to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Behold, I will profane My sanctuary, your arrogant boast, the desire of your eyes, the delight of your soul; and your sons and daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.21Say to the house of Israel, 'This is what the sovereign LORD says: Realize I am about to desecrate my sanctuary--the source of your confident pride, the object in which your eyes delight, and your life's passion. Your very own sons and daughters whom you have left behind will die by the sword.
And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your lips nor eat man’s bread of sorrow.22Then you will do as I have done: You will not cover your lip or eat food brought by others.
Your turbans shall be on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you shall neither mourn nor weep, but you shall pine away in your iniquities and mourn with one another.23Your turbans will be on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you will not mourn or weep, but you will rot for your iniquities and groan among yourselves.
Thus Ezekiel is a sign to you; according to all that he has done you shall do; and when this comes, you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.’ ”24Ezekiel will be an object lesson for you; you will do all that he has done. When it happens, then you will know that I am the sovereign LORD.'
‘And you, son of man—will it not be in the day when I take from them their stronghold, their joy and their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that on which they set their minds, their sons and their daughters:25"And you, son of man, this is what will happen on the day I take from them their stronghold--their beautiful source of joy, the object in which their eyes delight, and the main concern of their lives, as well as their sons and daughters:
that on that day one who escapes will come to you to let you hear it with your ears?26On that day a fugitive will come to you to report the news.
On that day your mouth will be opened to him who has escaped; you shall speak and no longer be mute. Thus you will be a sign to them, and they shall know that I am the LORD.’ ”27On that day you will be able to speak again; you will talk with the fugitive and be silent no longer. You will be an object lesson for them, and they will know that I am the LORD."
