New King James VersionNew International Version
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.4Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.6If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.9"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.10If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain in his love.
“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.13Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.
You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.14You are my friends if you do what I command.
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit--fruit that will last--and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
These things I command you, that you love one another.17This is my command: Love each other.
“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.18"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.20Remember what I told you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.21They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
He who hates Me hates My Father also.23Whoever hates me hates my Father as well.
If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.24If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.
But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’25But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.'
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.26"When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--he will testify about me.
And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.27And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
