| 1After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: | 1Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. |
| 2Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. | 2Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. |
| 3Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. | 3Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. |
| 4But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. | 4At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. |
| 5Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” | 5He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. |
| 6And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. | 6Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. |
| 7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. | 7Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. |
| 8But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. | 8The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. |
| 9Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. | 9When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. |
| 10Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.” | 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. |
| 11Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. | 11So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. |
| 12Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. | 12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. |
| 13Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. | 13Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. |
| 14This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead. | 14This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. |
| 15So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” | 15After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? ” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. |
| 16He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” | 16Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. |
| 17He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. | 17A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. |
| 18Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” | 18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” |
| 19This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.” | 19Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” |
| 20Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” | 20Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” |
| 21Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” | 21Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” |
| 22Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” | 22Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.” |
| 23Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?” | 23So the rumor spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that isn’t what Jesus said at all. He only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” |
| 24This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. | 24This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. And we know that his account of these things is accurate. |
| 25And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. | 25Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written. |
