New King James VersionNew Living Translation
Now it came to pass, a long time after the LORD had given rest to Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua was old, advanced in age.1The years passed, and the LORD had given the people of Israel rest from all their enemies. Joshua, who was now very old,
And Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers, and said to them: “I am old, advanced in age.2called together all the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel. He said to them, “I am now a very old man.
You have seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations because of you, for the LORD your God is He who has fought for you.3You have seen everything the LORD your God has done for you during my lifetime. The LORD your God has fought for you against your enemies.
See, I have divided to you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, as far as the Great Sea westward.4I have allotted to you as your homeland all the land of the nations yet unconquered, as well as the land of those we have already conquered—from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
And the LORD your God will expel them from before you and drive them out of your sight. So you shall possess their land, as the LORD your God promised you.5This land will be yours, for the LORD your God will himself drive out all the people living there now. You will take possession of their land, just as the LORD your God promised you.
Therefore be very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, lest you turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left,6“So be very careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the Book of Instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning either to the right or to the left.
and lest you go among these nations, these who remain among you. You shall not make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause anyone to swear by them; you shall not serve them nor bow down to them,7Make sure you do not associate with the other people still remaining in the land. Do not even mention the names of their gods, much less swear by them or serve them or worship them.
but you shall hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.8Rather, cling tightly to the LORD your God as you have done until now.
For the LORD has driven out from before you great and strong nations; but as for you, no one has been able to stand against you to this day.9“For the LORD has driven out great and powerful nations for you, and no one has yet been able to defeat you.
One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the LORD your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you.10Each one of you will put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the LORD your God fights for you, just as he has promised.
Therefore take careful heed to yourselves, that you love the LORD your God.11So be very careful to love the LORD your God.
Or else, if indeed you do go back, and cling to the remnant of these nations—these that remain among you—and make marriages with them, and go in to them and they to you,12“But if you turn away from him and cling to the customs of the survivors of these nations remaining among you, and if you intermarry with them,
know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. But they shall be snares and traps to you, and scourges on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the LORD your God has given you.13then know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive them out of your land. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap to you, a whip for your backs and thorny brambles in your eyes, and you will vanish from this good land the LORD your God has given you.
“Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.14“Soon I will die, going the way of everything on earth. Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the LORD your God has come true. Not a single one has failed!
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all the good things have come upon you which the LORD your God promised you, so the LORD will bring upon you all harmful things, until He has destroyed you from this good land which the LORD your God has given you.15But as surely as the LORD your God has given you the good things he promised, he will also bring disaster on you if you disobey him. He will completely destroy you from this good land he has given you.
When you have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you shall perish quickly from the good land which He has given you.”16If you break the covenant of the LORD your God by worshiping and serving other gods, his anger will burn against you, and you will quickly vanish from the good land he has given you.”
