The LORD kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised.1Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised.
She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would.2So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised.
And Abraham named their son Isaac.3And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore to him.
Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded.4When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.
Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born.5Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
And Sarah declared, “God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me.6Then Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears of this will laugh with me.”
Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age!” Hagar and Ishmael Are Sent Away7She added, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
When Isaac grew up and was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion.8So the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.
But Sarah saw Ishmael—the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar—making fun of her son, Isaac.9But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking her son,
So she turned to Abraham and demanded, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac. I won’t have it!”10and she said to Abraham, “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!”
This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son.11Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son Ishmael.
But God told Abraham, “Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.12But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your maidservant. Listen to everything that Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
But I will also make a nation of the descendants of Hagar’s son because he is your son, too.”13But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
So Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared food and a container of water, and strapped them on Hagar’s shoulders. Then he sent her away with their son, and she wandered aimlessly in the wilderness of Beersheba.14Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a skin of water, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her away with the boy. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.
When the water was gone, she put the boy in the shade of a bush.15When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes.
Then she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards away. “I don’t want to watch the boy die,” she said, as she burst into tears.16Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and wept.
But God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “Hagar, what’s wrong? Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.17Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong, Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies.
Go to him and comfort him, for I will make a great nation from his descendants.”18Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well full of water. She quickly filled her water container and gave the boy a drink.19Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
And God was with the boy as he grew up in the wilderness. He became a skillful archer,20And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer.
and he settled in the wilderness of Paran. His mother arranged for him to marry a woman from the land of Egypt. Abraham’s Covenant with Abimelech21And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
About this time, Abimelech came with Phicol, his army commander, to visit Abraham. “God is obviously with you, helping you in everything you do,” Abimelech said.22At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
“Swear to me in God’s name that you will never deceive me, my children, or any of my descendants. I have been loyal to you, so now swear that you will be loyal to me and to this country where you are living as a foreigner.”23Now, therefore, swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
Abraham replied, “Yes, I swear to it!”24And Abraham replied, “I swear it.”
Then Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had taken by force from Abraham’s servants.25But when Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had seized,
“This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Abimelech answered. “I have no idea who is responsible. You have never complained about this before.”26Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until today.”
Abraham then gave some of his sheep, goats, and cattle to Abimelech, and they made a treaty.27So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant.
But Abraham also took seven additional female lambs and set them off by themselves.28Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock,
Abimelech asked, “Why have you set these seven apart from the others?”29and Abimelech asked him, “Why have you set apart these seven ewe lambs?”
Abraham replied, “Please accept these seven lambs to show your agreement that I dug this well.”30He replied, “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I dug this well.”
Then he named the place Beersheba (which means “well of the oath”), because that was where they had sworn the oath.31So that place was called Beersheba, because it was there that the two of them swore an oath.
After making their covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech left with Phicol, the commander of his army, and they returned home to the land of the Philistines.32After they had made the covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the LORD, the Eternal God.33And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.
And Abraham lived as a foreigner in Philistine country for a long time.34And Abraham resided in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
