Psalm 40
NLT Parallel BSB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationBerean Study Bible
I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.2He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm.
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.3He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.
Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.4Blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, who has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.
O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.5Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done, and the plans You have for us—none can compare to You—if I proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count.
You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.6Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but my ears You have opened. Burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require.
Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures:7Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—it is written about me in the scroll:
I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”8I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.”
I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know.9I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; behold, I do not seal my lips, as You, O LORD, do know.
I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.10I have not covered up Your righteousness in my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and salvation; I have not concealed Your loving devotion and faithfulness from the great assembly.
LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.11O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me; Your loving devotion and faithfulness will always guard me.
For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.12For evils without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, so that I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart has failed within me.
Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me.13Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD, to help me.
May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace.14May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded; may those who wish me harm be repelled and humiliated.
Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!”15May those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” be appalled at their own shame.
But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!”16May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, “The LORD be magnified!”
As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay.17But I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my helper and deliverer; O my God, do not delay.
