| 1I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. | 1For the music director; By David, a psalm. I relied completely on the LORD, and he turned toward me and heard my cry for help. |
| 2He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. | 2He lifted me out of the watery pit, out of the slimy mud. He placed my feet on a rock and gave me secure footing. |
| 3He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. | 3He gave me reason to sing a new song, praising our God. May many see what God has done, so that they might swear allegiance to him and trust in the LORD! |
| 4Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols. | 4How blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD and does not seek help from the proud or from liars! |
| 5O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. | 5O LORD, my God, you have accomplished many things; you have done amazing things and carried out your purposes for us. No one can thwart you! I want to declare them and talk about them, but they are too numerous to recount! |
| 6You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings. | 6Receiving sacrifices and offerings are not your primary concern. You make that quite clear to me! You do not ask for burnt sacrifices and sin offerings. |
| 7Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: | 7Then I say, "Look! I come! What is written in the scroll pertains to me. |
| 8I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.” | 8I want to do what pleases you, my God. Your law dominates my thoughts." |
| 9I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know. | 9I have told the great assembly about your justice. Look! I spare no words! O LORD, you know this is true. |
| 10I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness. | 10I have not failed to tell about your justice; I spoke about your reliability and deliverance; I have not neglected to tell the great assembly about your loyal love and faithfulness. |
| 11LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. | 11O LORD, you do not withhold your compassion from me. May your loyal love and faithfulness continually protect me! |
| 12For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. | 12For innumerable dangers surround me. My sins overtake me so I am unable to see; they outnumber the hairs of my head so my strength fails me. |
| 13Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. | 13Please be willing, O LORD, to rescue me! O LORD, hurry and help me! |
| 14May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. | 14May those who are trying to snatch away my life be totally embarrassed and ashamed! May those who want to harm me be turned back and ashamed! |
| 15Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!” | 15May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be humiliated and disgraced! |
| 16But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!” | 16May all those who seek you be happy and rejoice in you! May those who love to experience your deliverance say continually, "May the LORD be praised!" |
| 17As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay. | 17I am oppressed and needy! May the Lord pay attention to me! You are my helper and my deliverer! O my God, do not delay! |
