NLT Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking,1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,
“Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.”2saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?”4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said, “for this is what the prophet wrote:5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
‘And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.’ ”6“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared.7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.
Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”8And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”
After this interview the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was.9After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.
When they saw the star, they were filled with joy!10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.11And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod. The Escape to Egypt12And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”13Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”
That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother,14And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt
and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.”15and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.16Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.
Herod’s brutal action fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:17Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
“A cry was heard in Ramah— weeping and great mourning. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted, for they are dead.” The Return to Nazareth18“A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”
When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.19But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
“Get up!” the angel said. “Take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead.”20saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.”
So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus and his mother.21And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
But when he learned that the new ruler of Judea was Herod’s son Archelaus, he was afraid to go there. Then, after being warned in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee.22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.
So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said: “He will be called a Nazarene.”23And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.
