Psalm 140
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
O LORD, rescue me from evil people. Protect me from those who are violent,1Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; preserve me from violent men,
those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long.2who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually.
Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips. Interlude3They make their tongue sharp as a serpent’s, and under their lips is the venom of asps. Selah
O LORD, keep me out of the hands of the wicked. Protect me from those who are violent, for they are plotting against me.4Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have planned to trip up my feet.
The proud have set a trap to catch me; they have stretched out a net; they have placed traps all along the way. Interlude5The arrogant have hidden a trap for me, and with cords they have spread a net; beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah
I said to the LORD, “You are my God!” Listen, O LORD, to my cries for mercy!6I say to the LORD, You are my God; give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O LORD!
O Sovereign LORD, the strong one who rescued me, you protected me on the day of battle.7O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle.
LORD, do not let evil people have their way. Do not let their evil schemes succeed, or they will become proud. Interlude8Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah
Let my enemies be destroyed by the very evil they have planned for me.9As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!
Let burning coals fall down on their heads. Let them be thrown into the fire or into watery pits from which they can’t escape.10Let burning coals fall upon them! Let them be cast into fire, into miry pits, no more to rise!
Don’t let liars prosper here in our land. Cause great disasters to fall on the violent.11Let not the slanderer be established in the land; let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!
But I know the LORD will help those they persecute; he will give justice to the poor.12I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy.
Surely righteous people are praising your name; the godly will live in your presence.13Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name; the upright shall dwell in your presence.
