New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
The LORD said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the priests, the descendants of Aaron. “A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean by touching the dead body of a relative.1The LORD told Moses, "Speak to the priests, Aaron's sons, and tell them that no priest is to defile himself on account of the dead among his people,
The only exceptions are his closest relatives—his mother or father, son or daughter, brother,2except his close relatives—his mother, father, son, daughter, brother, or
or his virgin sister who depends on him because she has no husband.3virgin sister (who is a near relative of him and did not have a husband— he may defile himself for her).
But a priest must not defile himself and make himself unclean for someone who is related to him only by marriage.4Because he is a husband among his people, he is not to defile himself, thereby polluting himself.
“The priests must not shave their heads or trim their beards or cut their bodies.5"They are not to cut their hair in ritualistic patterns on their heads, deface the edges of their beards, or make incisions in their flesh.
They must be set apart as holy to their God and must never bring shame on the name of God. They must be holy, for they are the ones who present the special gifts to the LORD, gifts of food for their God.6They are to be holy to their God. They are not to defile the name of their God, because they're the ones who bring the offerings of the LORD made by fire—the food of their God—so they are to be holy.
“Priests may not marry a woman defiled by prostitution, and they may not marry a woman who is divorced from her husband, for the priests are set apart as holy to their God.7"They are not to marry a prostitute or a woman who has been dishonored or who was divorced from her husband, because the priest is holy to his God.
You must treat them as holy because they offer up food to your God. You must consider them holy because I, the LORD, am holy, and I make you holy.8Consecrate him, because he's the one who offers the food of your God. He is to be holy for you, because I, the LORD, the one who sanctifies you, am holy.
“If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she also defiles her father’s holiness, and she must be burned to death.9"Now if the daughter of any priest defiles herself by being a prostitute, she defiles her father. She is to be incinerated.
“The high priest has the highest rank of all the priests. The anointing oil has been poured on his head, and he has been ordained to wear the priestly garments. He must never leave his hair uncombed or tear his clothing.10"The high priest among his relatives—whose head has been anointed with oil and who has been consecrated to put on the priestly clothing—is not to let his hair hang loose or to tear his clothes.
He must not defile himself by going near a dead body. He may not make himself ceremonially unclean even for his father or mother.11He is not to come near any dead body—whether the deceased is his father or his mother—so as not to defile himself.
He must not defile the sanctuary of his God by leaving it to attend to a dead person, for he has been made holy by the anointing oil of his God. I am the LORD.12He is not to go out of the sanctuary or defile the sanctuary of his God, because his God's consecrating oil of anointing rests on him. I am the LORD.
“The high priest may marry only a virgin.13"Furthermore, he is to marry a true virgin.
He may not marry a widow, a woman who is divorced, or a woman who has defiled herself by prostitution. She must be a virgin from his own clan,14He is not to marry a widow or one who has been divorced, has been defiled, or has been a prostitute. Instead, he is to take a virgin from among his people as his wife.
so that he will not dishonor his descendants among his clan, for I am the LORD who makes him holy.”15"He is not to defile his children among his people, because I am the LORD, who sets him apart."
Then the LORD said to Moses,16The LORD told Moses,
“Give the following instructions to Aaron: In all future generations, none of your descendants who has any defect will qualify to offer food to his God.17"Tell Aaron that whoever of your descendants throughout their generations has a bodily defect is not to approach to offer the food of his God.
No one who has a defect qualifies, whether he is blind, lame, disfigured, deformed,18Indeed, any person who has a defect is not to approach the Tent of Meeting— the blind, the lame, one who is mutilated in the face or who has a very long limb,
or has a broken foot or arm,19or a person who has a fractured foot or hand,
or is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or has a defective eye, or skin sores or scabs, or damaged testicles.20has scoliosis, is a dwarf, or has an eye defect, an itching disease, scabs, or a crushed testicle.
No descendant of Aaron who has a defect may approach the altar to present special gifts to the LORD. Since he has a defect, he may not approach the altar to offer food to his God.21None of the descendants of Aaron the priest who has a defect is to approach to bring offerings of the LORD made by fire, since he has a defect. He is not to approach to offer the food of his God.
However, he may eat from the food offered to God, including the holy offerings and the most holy offerings.22However, he may eat the food of his God, including the most holy and the holy offerings,
Yet because of his physical defect, he may not enter the room behind the inner curtain or approach the altar, for this would defile my holy places. I am the LORD who makes them holy.”23but he is not to enter through the curtain nor approach the altar, since he has a defect. That way, he won't defile my sanctuary, since I am the LORD, who sets you apart."
So Moses gave these instructions to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.24Moses told all of this to Aaron, to his sons, and to all the Israelis.
