| 1 When I looked again, I saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. | 1 Then I looked up and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. |
| 2“Where are you going?” I asked. He replied, “I am going to measure Jerusalem, to see how wide and how long it is.” | 2I asked, "Where are you going?" He responded, "To measure Jerusalem in order to determine its width and length." |
| 3Then the angel who was with me went to meet a second angel who was coming toward him. | 3Look! That angel who was talking to me left, and another angel came forward to meet him. |
| 4The other angel said, “Hurry, and say to that young man, ‘Jerusalem will someday be so full of people and livestock that there won’t be room enough for everyone! Many will live outside the city walls. | 4That other angel told him, "Run and tell that young man: 'Jerusalem will be an inhabited city without walls due to the number of people and livestock within it. |
| 5Then I, myself, will be a protective wall of fire around Jerusalem, says the LORD. And I will be the glory inside the city!’” The Exiles Are Called Home | 5I myself will be an encircling rampart of fire,' declares the LORD, 'and I will be the glory in her midst.' |
| 6The LORD says, “Come away! Flee from Babylon in the land of the north, for I have scattered you to the four winds. | 6"'Come now! Come now! Flee from the land of the north,' declares the LORD, 'for I have dispersed you like the four winds of heaven,' declares the LORD. |
| 7Come away, people of Zion, you who are exiled in Babylon!” | 7"'Come now, Zion! Escape, you who are living with the residents of Babylon. |
| 8After a period of glory, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies sent me against the nations who plundered you. For he said, “Anyone who harms you harms my most precious possession. | 8For this is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "In pursuit of glory I was sent to the nations who plundered you, because whoever injures you injures the pupil of my eye. |
| 9I will raise my fist to crush them, and their own slaves will plunder them.” Then you will know that the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. | 9And look, I will shake my fist over them, and they will become plunder for their former slaves. And you will know that the LORD of the Heavenly Armies sent me."'" |
| 10The LORD says, “Shout and rejoice, O beautiful Jerusalem, for I am coming to live among you. | 10"Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion! Take note! I am coming to live in your midst," declares the LORD. |
| 11Many nations will join themselves to the LORD on that day, and they, too, will be my people. I will live among you, and you will know that the LORD of Heaven’s Armies sent me to you. | 11"Many nations will cling to the LORD at that time and will become my people. I will live in your midst, and you will know that the LORD of the Heavenly Armies has sent me to you. |
| 12The land of Judah will be the LORD’s special possession in the holy land, and he will once again choose Jerusalem to be his own city. | 12The LORD will take possession of Judah as his own property in the Holy Land—and he will choose Jerusalem again. |
| 13Be silent before the LORD, all humanity, for he is springing into action from his holy dwelling.” | 13Be silent, every living thing, in the presence of the LORD, because he is emerging from his Holy Place." |
