Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth.3Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks.4For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer. A Good Servant of Christ Jesus5For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed.6If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.7But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”8For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it.9This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.10For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them.11These things command and teach.
Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.12Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.13Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.14Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress.15Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.16Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
