When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.1And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.2And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.3And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned.4And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the LORD began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished.5And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat! Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man,6And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded.7And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household.8But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”9There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible.10And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work.11And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house.12And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled,13And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look!” she said. “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed.14That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.”15And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.
She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home.16And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said.17And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:
“But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me!” Joseph Put in Prison18And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.
Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her.19And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.
So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained.20And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the LORD made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden.21But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison.22And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.
The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.23The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.
