Job 31
NLT Parallel NASB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationNew American Standard Bible 1995
“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.1"I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?
For what has God above chosen for us? What is our inheritance from the Almighty on high?2"And what is the portion of God from above Or the heritage of the Almighty from on high?
Isn’t it calamity for the wicked and misfortune for those who do evil?3"Is it not calamity to the unjust And disaster to those who work iniquity?
Doesn’t he see everything I do and every step I take?4"Does He not see my ways And number all my steps?
“Have I lied to anyone or deceived anyone?5"If I have walked with falsehood, And my foot has hastened after deceit,
Let God weigh me on the scales of justice, for he knows my integrity.6Let Him weigh me with accurate scales, And let God know my integrity.
If I have strayed from his pathway, or if my heart has lusted for what my eyes have seen, or if I am guilty of any other sin,7"If my step has turned from the way, Or my heart followed my eyes, Or if any spot has stuck to my hands,
then let someone else eat the crops I have planted. Let all that I have planted be uprooted.8Let me sow and another eat, And let my crops be uprooted.
“If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lusted for my neighbor’s wife,9"If my heart has been enticed by a woman, Or I have lurked at my neighbor's doorway,
then let my wife serve another man; let other men sleep with her.10May my wife grind for another, And let others kneel down over her.
For lust is a shameful sin, a crime that should be punished.11"For that would be a lustful crime; Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by judges.
It is a fire that burns all the way to hell. It would wipe out everything I own.12"For it would be fire that consumes to Abaddon, And would uproot all my increase.
“If I have been unfair to my male or female servants when they brought their complaints to me,13"If I have despised the claim of my male or female slaves When they filed a complaint against me,
how could I face God? What could I say when he questioned me?14What then could I do when God arises? And when He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?
For God created both me and my servants. He created us both in the womb.15"Did not He who made me in the womb make him, And the same one fashion us in the womb?
“Have I refused to help the poor, or crushed the hopes of widows?16"If I have kept the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
Have I been stingy with my food and refused to share it with orphans?17Or have eaten my morsel alone, And the orphan has not shared it
No, from childhood I have cared for orphans like a father, and all my life I have cared for widows.18(But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And from infancy I guided her),
Whenever I saw the homeless without clothes and the needy with nothing to wear,19If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering,
did they not praise me for providing wool clothing to keep them warm?20If his loins have not thanked me, And if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep,
“If I raised my hand against an orphan, knowing the judges would take my side,21If I have lifted up my hand against the orphan, Because I saw I had support in the gate,
then let my shoulder be wrenched out of place! Let my arm be torn from its socket!22Let my shoulder fall from the socket, And my arm be broken off at the elbow.
That would be better than facing God’s judgment. For if the majesty of God opposes me, what hope is there?23"For calamity from God is a terror to me, And because of His majesty I can do nothing.
“Have I put my trust in money or felt secure because of my gold?24"If I have put my confidence in gold, And called fine gold my trust,
Have I gloated about my wealth and all that I own?25If I have gloated because my wealth was great, And because my hand had secured so much;
“Have I looked at the sun shining in the skies, or the moon walking down its silver pathway,26If I have looked at the sun when it shone Or the moon going in splendor,
and been secretly enticed in my heart to throw kisses at them in worship?27And my heart became secretly enticed, And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,
If so, I should be punished by the judges, for it would mean I had denied the God of heaven.28That too would have been an iniquity calling for judgment, For I would have denied God above.
“Have I ever rejoiced when disaster struck my enemies, or become excited when harm came their way?29"Have I rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy, Or exulted when evil befell him?
No, I have never sinned by cursing anyone or by asking for revenge.30"No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin By asking for his life in a curse.
“My servants have never said, ‘He let others go hungry.’31"Have the men of my tent not said, 'Who can find one who has not been satisfied with his meat '?
I have never turned away a stranger but have opened my doors to everyone.32"The alien has not lodged outside, For I have opened my doors to the traveler.
“Have I tried to hide my sins like other people do, concealing my guilt in my heart?33"Have I covered my transgressions like Adam, By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,
Have I feared the crowd or the contempt of the masses, so that I kept quiet and stayed indoors?34Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, And kept silent and did not go out of doors?
“If only someone would listen to me! Look, I will sign my name to my defense. Let the Almighty answer me. Let my accuser write out the charges against me.35"Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature; Let the Almighty answer me! And the indictment which my adversary has written,
I would face the accusation proudly. I would wear it like a crown.36Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, I would bind it to myself like a crown.
For I would tell him exactly what I have done. I would come before him like a prince.37"I would declare to Him the number of my steps; Like a prince I would approach Him.
“If my land accuses me and all its furrows cry out together,38"If my land cries out against me, And its furrows weep together;
or if I have stolen its crops or murdered its owners,39If I have eaten its fruit without money, Or have caused its owners to lose their lives,
then let thistles grow on that land instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley.” Job’s words are ended.40Let briars grow instead of wheat, And stinkweed instead of barley." The words of Job are ended.
